It combines data, models, and applications to provide a comprehensive virtual representation of marine systems. The goal is to make valuable marine knowledge collected across Europe accessible to all users, from researchers to policymakers and the general public.
In this episode of Ocean, we follow researchers in Italy and Belgium as they collect marine data in the field to feed into digital models (DTO-BioFlow project). We then attend the Digital Ocean Forum in Brussels, where the prototype infrastructure for the European Digital Twin Ocean is unveiled, showcasing potential applications of this innovative technology (EDITO-Infra project).
OCEAN is a Euronews magazine in collaboration with the Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (MARE). It features monthly 8-minute videos, where we discover fascinating projects and developments related to the ocean and coastal communities.
Broadcast since 2019, OCEAN features episodes on marine protected areas, small-scale fisheries, ocean energy, aquaculture, IUU fishing, sustainable fisheries and much more.yt:video:GZ1mEEzCHfYGZ1mEEzCHfYUCT_QjivHLgE_2MFDAakw2tgOCEAN - Digital Twin of the Ocean: Europe’s game-changer for sustainable seasEU Ocean & Fisherieshttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCT_QjivHLgE_2MFDAakw2tg2024-09-30T14:18:53+00:002024-10-07T22:41:29+00:00OCEAN - Digital Twin of the Ocean: Europe’s game-changer for sustainable seasThe European Digital Twin Ocean (EU DTO) is an ambitious project aimed at creating a digital replica of the ocean environment. Why are these gelatinous creatures appearing in greater numbers, what implications does this have for marine ecosystems and coastal communities — and is there a silver lining to the jellyfish boom?
This episode of 'Ocean' takes us to Denmark and Italy, where researchers involved in the EU-funded GoJelly project are exploring innovative uses for these often-overlooked sea dwellers. From combating microplastic pollution in our oceans to enhancing human health, developing sustainable fertilizers, and even crafting unique dishes for culinary innovators, jellyfish are proving their potential to contribute to ecological solutions and a more sustainable future.

These decisions on fish stocks, resource management and economic viability are grounded in scientific reports and accurate data.
This critical work is carried out by dedicated officers like Kelly, Luca and Frank, three scientists at the public research unit Aquatic Resources Malta. Their deep passion for the sea fuels their data collection mission, whether they are boarding fishing vessels or attending fish auctions. Euronews travels to Malta to explore what motivates these scientists and how their efforts contribute to preserving our marine ecosystem.

This practice not only enhances coastal livelihoods but also plays a crucial role in improving marine health by acting as carbon sinks and supporting biodiversity.
In this episode of 'Ocean' we journey to Ireland to meet a family who transitioned from fishing to seaweed farming. We take a close look at their organic farm and their new seaweed processing facility, showcasing how this economic venture is evolving in harmony with the coastal environment.

However, the European Union's intervention in 2004, with a recovery plan that set science-based fishing limits and gear restrictions, marked the beginning of a positive change. By 2016, the hake population reached a record biomass, showcasing a significant recovery to more than triple the levels seen in 1980.
While the European hake has made a commendable comeback and is no longer seen as a species of concern by the IUCN, the situation for Mediterranean hake is less optimistic. All Mediterranean hake stocks are considered unsustainable, and despite some small signs of improvement, they are still listed as vulnerable.
In this episode of "Ocean," filmed in Spain, we visit Galicia to see how the recovery of the northern hake has benefited local fishers and consumers. We then discuss what lessons can be learned from this example to improve the situation of Mediterranean hake stocks with researchers and fishermen in Mallorca.
