The American Heart Association Maine Heart Walk is Sunday, May 16, and for the second year in a row, it is being held virtually. Organizers say the cause is more important than ever.
All of the money raised through the walk stays in Maine to help fund research and education about stroke and heart attack. Mike Simonds, Chief Operating Officer at UNUM, is the chair of this year's event.
"People are really looking forward to the event," said Simonds, "but also looking forward to getting to the other side. Coming through COVID, there's probably never been more of a need of that encouragement to say 'let's get outside, let's think about eating a little healthier, let's look at how we're managing our stress.'"
Health issues have been pushed to the forefront over the last year and the association is working to make sure every Mainer has the same opportunity for better heart health. Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Maine.
"We know that there’s a lot of inequity too," said Simonds. "Even here within the state if you’re in this ZIP code versus that ZIP code. Things like your level of education, your level of income-- that can be really make a difference. Up to 20 years of life expectancy."
It is a serious topic, but Simonds is trying to add a little levity to the event, with some help. He and L.L. Bean President Steve Smith made a video highlighting the cause and the importance of having fun.
"I just also want you and your viewers to know that I don’t always wear a headband and wristband when I work out, but I have found that nothing works more than just having a little fun with yourself," said Simonds.
You can still help raise money and then run or walk anywhere on Sunday. You are also encouraged to share pictures and videos to share the message.
