Dr. Anthony Fauci is an immunologist who has made substantial contributions to HIV/AIDS research and other immunodeficiencies, both as a scientist and as the head of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease.
The grandson of Sicilian immigrants, Anthony Fauci grew up in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, New York. In 1958, he graduated from Regis High School in New York City, where he was captain of the basketball team. He graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1962, and received his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College in 1966. He then completed an internship and residency at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center.
In 1968, he came to the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a clinical associate in the Laboratory of Clinical Investigation (LCI) in the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). In 1977, Dr. Fauci was appointed deputy clinical director of NIAID. He shifted the focus of the Laboratory of Clinical Infection at NIAID towards investigating the nature of AIDS in the early 1980s. In 1984, he became Director of the NIAID, and the following year the coordinator of all AIDS research at NIH. He was one of the principal architects of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, which has been responsible for saving millions of lives throughout the developing world.
Dr. Fauci has delivered major lectures all over the world and is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of Science, the George M. Kober Medal of the Association of American Physicians, the Mary Woodard Lasker Award for Public Service, the Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research, the Robert Koch Gold Medal, the Prince Mahidol Award, and 38 honorary doctoral degrees from universities in the United States and abroad. He is the author, coauthor, or editor of more than 1,200 scientific publications, including several textbooks.
