Dupont Circle
Originally named Pacific Circle because it was the westernmost portion of Washington. In 1884 the name was changed to Dupont Circle in honor of Civil War hero Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont. A bronze statue, cast by Launt Thompson, was placed in the center of the circle only to be replaced in 1921 by a stone fountain presented as a gift by the Du Pont family.
