September 13, 2010 – Flushing Meadows, NY – With his 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 win over Novak Djokovic in the finals of the US Open Championships Rafael Nadal joins even more elite company in tennis history. The Spaniard becomes only the seventh man to capture a career “slam” winning all four major tournaments – Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon and now the US Open. The magnificent seven includes Don Budge, Rod Laver, Fred Perry, Roy Emerson, Andre Agassi, Roger Federer and now Nadal.
In an even more elite club, Nadal joins Andre Agassi and the only men to win the golden slam – all four majors and an Olympic gold medal.
In winning his third major title of the year and ninth overall Nadal has clinched the 2010 year-end No. 1 ranking.
