Fintech was the largest sector in the startup ecosystem in South Africa in 2021. Payments and remittances were the largest sub-sector, with 40 startups, representing 27.2 percent of the fintech startups. Moreover, lending and finance and insurtech followed with 25 and 24 startups, respectively.
