The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has posed a real challenge to the senior housing sector. People living in senior housing facilities faced higher risk of severe and long term complications from the virus because of age and underlying health conditions. Between the fourth quarter of 2019 and the second quarter of 2021, occupancy rates in senior housing dropped from 87.9 percent to 78.7 percent as many people opted for alternative living arrangements. The occupancy rate has increased since but as of the third quarter of 2022, it remained below the levels before the pandemic.
