Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary in Victory Park, Gauteng

About Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary

The Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary is concealed within one of the biggest and most treasured natural gems in Gauteng, Delta Park; right in the heart of Johannesburg. Delta Park comprises grasslands and forested areas, as well as three dams. These combine to create an oasis that is a delight to explore via the many trails that criss-cross its 104 hectares.

It is within these surrounds that the Bloom brothers established the bird sanctuary in 1975, making it the oldest in this South African province. Since its establishment, over 250 different bird species have been identified and recorded. Thanks to the two dams in the sanctuary, there are a number of water birds found here; including ducks, moorhens and coots.

There are hides overlooking the dams, from where nature-lovers and bird watchers can watch in tranquillity as the many species build nests, feed their young, forage for food and delight their spectators with song. In addition, there are some rather unusual species to be found in the Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary. These include the Ayres hawk-eagle and the Madagascar cuckoo.

Thanks to its prime location, the sanctuary is only a half an hour's drive from the busy centre of Johannesburg and its world-class retail and commercial amenities, despite feeling like it is miles away from any form of civilisation. This also places it within a convenient proximity to the OR Tambo International Airport, which is of prime importance to international tourists.
