Rwanda - List of Champions

Rwanda - List of Champions

A number of "groupements des footballeurs" existed in the 1940s, including Intwari ("Les Braves"), Ingabo nziza ("Les Valeureux Guerriers") and Amagaju ("Les Bruns Clairs").
After independence in 1962, a number of clubs described as "championbship teams", viz. Amagaju, Amaregura, Amasata, Byumba, Gasoro and Ngabonziza, disappeared; at least one of those, Amagaju, later resurfaced. Instead clubs like Demar FC and Garde Nationale (later Panthères Noirs) were created by the government or prominent officials therein; they were followed, in the early eighties, by Etincelles and Muhungwa.
After the genocide in 1994, Demar and Garde Nationale were dissolved and a new army club, APR FC, was created.
