African Super Cup

African Super Cup

Played between the winners of the African Champions' Cup and Cup Winners' Cup. After the latter was abolished (at the end of the 2003 season), the winners of the CAF Confederation Cup enter. The 2003 edition (played in 2004) was dedicated to Marc-Vivien Foé.

While the official tournament organised by CAF was first held in 1992, another such tournament, known as Cup for African Solidarity in 1978, was organised earlier by the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa (SCSA), and played for a cup donated by President Omar Bongo of Gabon. The 1977 winners of the Champions' Cup (Hafia (Conakry)) and Cup Winners' Cup (Enugu Rangers) were to have met in Libreville (Gabon) in May 1978, but the Guinean side did not show up for the match.
It is unknown how often the cup was played for afterwards, but on 27/1/1982, the 1981 winners of the Champions' Cup (JE Tizi-Ouzou) and Cup Winners' Cup (Union Douala) met in Abidjan for the "Super-Coupe d'Afrique", with JE Tizi-Ouzou winning a penalty shoot-out 4-3 after a 1-1 draw, in a match following the III Tournoi de Fraternité
