Eve's life as a spy is not adding up to what she had hoped it would be when she started. She is a bored, very smart, MI5 security officer who is very desk-bound. Villanelle is a very talented killer, mercurial in mood, who clings to the luxuries of her job. Eve and Villanelle go head to head in a fierce game of cat and mouse, each woman equally obsessed with the other as Eve is tasked with hunting down the psychopathic assassin. Sarah Barnett, BBCA president, says, "'Killing Eve' stands out in a sea of scripted stories as refreshingly entertaining and great fun."

Scott Bryan BBC.com Phoebe Waller-Bridge is loved because she writes characters and she writes stories that you don't often see on TV. What this drama does, is [that it] goes against all the conventions of a drama that you'd normally expect. Jul 15, 2020 Full Review Hannah Giorgis The Atlantic What distinguishes Killing Eve isn't just that Villanelle is a categorically transgressive female character; it's also that she's interesting. Sep 10, 2019 Full Review Eric Deggans NPR Executive producer Phoebe Waller-Bridge subverts every male-centered trope of espionage thrillers as Eve and the assassin play a deadly cat-and-mouse game fueled by their mutual fascination with each other. Dec 17, 2018 Full Review Michael Cuby them. The debut season of Killing Eve came in second on my list of best shows of 2018... Oct 12, 2022 Full Review Valerie Ettenhofer Film School Rejects Killing Eve deserves a spot among the ranks of Jessica Jones and the gone-too-soon MTV series Sweet/Vicious as series that utilize the female gaze. Apr 19, 2021 Full Review David Walsh World Socialist Web Site All in all, despite the presence of some talented performers, Killing Eve is a poor artistic effort, superficial, unconvincing and unenlightening. Caleb W I watched this through to Season 4, and found it hard to follow and truly unbelievable at times. One can never tell really who the 12 are, what they want, and who's really in charge of the organization. Plus, Villanelle seems to be easily able to prosecution; jail time; wounds, etc. in completely unrealistic ways. She never seems to change despite all these setbacks and so I found it watchable but had to be willing to completely suspend disbelief. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/23/24 Full Review Audience Member As a sapphic and a tv show fanatic, I did not know what to expect going headfirst into 'Killing Eve' I had heard some reviews saying it was "good" but slow paced and I heard others saying it was "Bad" but fast paced. Let me just say this, as someone who watched it when it first came out and watched it until its eventual "end" season one was and still is groundbreaking for the tv and the lgbtqia+ community. This is the representation we need, PWB; put her whole heart and soul into the writing and it shows truly and utterly. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/27/24 Full Review Mark S I am 15 minutes into s1 ep2. Wow is this poorly written and (almost entirely) poorly acted. Lazy and phoned-in on both counts. Really shocking how we've descended into such totally implausible, condescendingly pandering, and committee-regurgitated writing being considered as groundbreaking. The only redeeming quality is the exceptional acting by Jodie Comer. She works well with very little to work with. Another great reason to go right back to what I'm reading. Always superior, the written word. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/23/24 Full Review Audience Member Watched the first season and then stopped watching. I never got hooked, therefore the mid rating. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 06/23/24 Full Review R S I appreciate that this show was attempting to be different. It didn't want to be cliche or dull, which is what a lot of procedural spy/crime/etc. shows are. It also didn't want to take itself too seriously. Villanelle is a dangerous sociopath trained as an assassin who appears to have an innate desire for real relationships (but is incapable of doing so). Eve is an out-of-her-depth analyst who relies completely on her intelligence, & even that doesn't help her much. The show seeks to jettison bravado or "badassery" & just see what happens when you pit two such characters against one another, but giving it a somewhat wacky spin. Ok. I was down. But the tone shifts too wildly, & even the comedy just becomes out of place. I just couldn't get on board with some of the plotting. At certain points all of Eve's intelligence just evaporates, ruining the character. I'm supposed to be impressed by how cheeky some of these turns are, but I just find them dumb. Kudos for trying not to be run-of-the-mill, but for me, this show ultimately fails. 2 1/2 stars for good performances, but that's about it. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 06/11/24 Full Review Mike W Not for me. I see the appeal to a certain kind of audience, but to me this type of humor doesn't work in this genre mix. Also, Sandra Oh seems to play the same character in every movie, narrow range as an actress. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/18/24 Full Review Read all reviews
