Newcomer Katherine Langford plays the role of Hannah, a young woman who takes her own life. Two weeks after her tragic death, a classmate named Clay finds a mysterious box on his porch. Inside the box are recordings made by Hannah --- on whom Clay had a crush --- in which she explains the 13 reasons why she chose to commit suicide. If Clay decides to listen to the recordings, he will find out if and how he made the list. This intricate and heart-wrenching tale is told through Clay and Hannah's dual narratives.

Critics Consensus

13 Reasons Why attempts to break away from its first two seasons only to become a melodramatic mess of a murder mystery.

Scott Bryan BBC.com It just feels incredibly exploitative. If you want to have a show that helps you, go elsewhere. Jul 15, 2020 Full Review Jourdain Searles AV Club Every season, the number of women in the cast shrinks, and they're replaced with more tortured boys in increasingly violent situations....It's just more blatant about it now. Sep 4, 2019 Full Review Constance Grady Vox Every time this show almost does something good it just veers off for the lazy sophomoric treatise instead. It's exhausting and it's unpleasant and it's often dangerous, and at this point, there is no reason why it should still be around. Rated: 1/5 Sep 3, 2019 Full Review Swetha Ramakrishnan Firstpost If 13 Reasons Why continues to a fourth season, it stands the risk of becoming another Riverdale. Oct 9, 2023 Full Review Stephanie Archer Film Inquiry Season 3 is not as strong as its previous seasons, but that does not make it any less relevant. Sep 25, 2019 Full Review Proma Khosla Mashable 13 Reasons Why repeatedly indulges in the "angry young man" trope, but Season 3 sees Clay become more of an impediment to his own benevolence than ever. Peter G If every kid in the world were able to watch this show, we might end all war within a generation. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/15/24 Full Review Yesake B I can appreciate what they were trying to do with focusing on Tyler situation ever since that bathroom scene. But the whole who killed Bryce thing was unnecessary. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/19/24 Full Review Jules N Cette saison est horrible. How did this ever get allowed to have a 2nd season let alone a 3rd and 4th. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/01/24 Full Review D R This by far had to be the worse season in the series. I believe the series should've ended with season 2 instead of going in the direction of Riverdale or How to Get Away with Murder. Epic failure of the writers, netflix and the producers. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/05/22 Full Review jonathan h The introduction of a new character to narrate & who supposedly has all this intimate knowledge & understanding of all the established characters was a strange writing choice. For some reason, they tried to make this character integral to the over-arching murder-mystery but it really didn't work. It felt contrived & very distracting. Most of the regular characters have changed quite dramatically, to the point of being quite unlikeable. Not a great season, overall, but certainly not as bad as the final season.
