Twenty-thousand years ago, Earth is a wondrous, prehistoric world filled with great danger, not the least of which is the beginning of the Ice Age. To avoid a really bad frostbite, the planet's majestic creatures - and a few small, slothful ones - begin migrating south . The story revolves around sub-zero heroes: a woolly mammoth, a saber-toothed tiger, a sloth and a prehistoric combination of a squirrel and rat, known as Scrat.

Critics Consensus

Even though Ice Age is treading over the same grounds as Monsters, Inc. and Shrek, it has enough wit and laughs to stand on its own.

David Ansen Newsweek In the time-honored tradition of kids' films, Ice Age mixes broad displays of physical cruelty with a sweet message, which in this case is about the need of each member of a herd to look after the other. Daniel N Absolutely brilliant. Loved it as a kid and love it as an adult. Great characters, great writing and great storytelling. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/03/24 Full Review Jay W "Ice Age" came out still in the early days of CGI animated features. The "Best Animated Picture Oscar" had only just been introduced the previous year. It wasn't made by Pixar or Dreamworks it was made by Blue Sky Studios. Blue Sky was basically what was left over from Fox animation after the bombing of "Titan A. E.". In fact, there was a time where Don Bluth was attached to direct this film. The director of "Land Before Time", directing another prehistoric animal adventure, sounds like a good fit to me. But alas, it was not meant to be. The actual story in the movie "Ice Age" is about as cookie cutter as they come. A grumpy no-nonsense loner is paired up with a fast-talking comedic relief sidekick. The two of them team up to return a baby to its family. Added to the mix is a tiger named Diego, voiced by Denis Leary, who wants the baby for purposes of revenge. He teams up with the duo in plans to betray them later. Hijinx ensue. The marketing at the time focused most of its time on the squirrel, Scratch. Enough so, that when I went to watch the film, I was surprised what little impact he makes in the story. He could be completely cut out of the movie and nothing would be missed. He is just a source for slapstick humor when the movie needs to wake the kids up. It is a sad state of things when I say that the filler is the selling point of the movie. The movie also spends 5 minutes on the animals going to change the baby's diaper. Despite being voiced by the lady who voices every cartoon baby, Tara Strong, the baby doesn't have much of a personality. It is just there as the plot device. To be cute at sometimes to warm up a character's heart, and to cry when the story needs a detour. It is a kids' road trip buddy comedy with no real surprises. It follows all the plot points you'd expect and tells most of the jokes you'd expect. Not awful, but nothing worth going out of your way to see. "Ice Age" gets a cold reception from me. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 11/26/24 Full Review Robby B This should have been a standalone movie. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/01/24 Full Review TROY S A highly entertaining, family film with a strong message about cooperation, friendship and caring for your fellow herd members.
