Hank Sartin Time Out Rated: 3/5 Nov 18, 2011 Full Review Cosmo Landesman Times (UK) Written and directed by a newcomer, Eric Guirado, this is a delightful coming-of-age film that quietly explores the hidden tensions in family life. Rated: 4/5 Apr 28, 2009 Full Review David Parkinson Empire Magazine A little predictable in places, but explores family relationships with pathos and perception. Rated: 3/5 Apr 24, 2009 Full Review Sarah Manvel Critic's Notebook What every single person in this film does is treat the other adults as adults. Seeing it done so consistently emphasizes how rare it is to see this not only on screen, but also in real life. Dave S If ever there was a movie that could be described as ‘nice’, it would be The Grocer’s Son. That’s not a bad thing by any means – it’s really quite enjoyable from start to finish, but it is relentlessly nice. When his father suffers a heart attack, the estranged son returns home to Provence to help run the family grocery business. There is really nothing to dislike about the movie, being as nice as it is. The only possible complaint would be the predictability of virtually everything. Will the young man reconcile with his father? Will the main character have a life epiphany? Where will his relationship with his unrequited love lead? But just because you know the final destination doesn’t mean that you won’t enjoy the journey. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 08/03/24 Full Review Audience Member Its beautiful locations in rural France and its sensitive portrayal of family relationships made this movie about a son reluctantly taking over the reins of his father's business a please to watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Well done in many ways. love watching movies about people and relationships through the non-American lens. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member A bit boring actually Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/10/23 Full Review Audience Member 3.5/5 --- A well done indie drama about life in the small country where a son takes over his father's grocery store/route. Quiet scenes with very relatable characters (I to the son), nice cast of varied characters... All subtle with a message about people and how we chose to live our lives, or at least try to make the most of what life gives us, especially with family. About growing up and taking responsibilities and being a good person past our history. Recommended! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member It's a small, well-rounded movie that you'd be hard pressed to find fault with, achieving its modest goals with subtle aplomb while whipping up humour and empathy from Antoine's rapport with his doddery clientele.
