- Historic Trains
- The Rolling Stock Station has the largest exhibition area of any station in The Railway Museum. 36 different rolling stock are on display, from Locomotive No. 1, the first locomotive to run when Japan opened its first railway in 1872, to the Shinkansen, which boasted the world's fastest cutting edge technology. Here you can experience the tremendous size and power of rolling stock, and feel first hand the dynamism of these trains when they were in operation, through a production using video, audio, lighting, and ICT.

- Experience railway safety operations
- Railway professionals keep passengers safe and trains running on time. In this exhibit, you can experience how precision teamwork done by these professionals keep railways running safe and on time. Learn about the safety, precision, and punctuality required in railway operation through stunning live action video, as well as exhibits of professional tools and equipment. Become a pro yourself, and experience the burden of responsibility, the appeal, and the fulfillment of keeping railways safe.
HISTORY STATION
South Bldg 3F
- Tracing the technological progress of Japanese railway
- The first railway in Japan started operation in 1872. In the History Station, the museum shines a light on the nearly 150-year history from the start of operations until today. What was expected of railways in each era, and how did engineers and other railway workers respond to the needs of the era and demands of the people? Historical materials and photographs on exhibit here explain the process of how railways evolved in great detail.
SCIENCE STATION
Main Bldg 2F/3F
- What are the principles and mechanisms of railway?
- What mechanisms make railway rolling stock run? How is it that trains can run safely without crashing into each other? You may take it for granted that the trains are always running in Japan, but how they work may still be a mystery to you. Use the exhibit equipment to discover the hidden secrets of railways, and answer questions from a scientific perspective. At the Science Station, you can enjoy learning all about the principles and mechanisms that keep trains running through interactive exhibits.

- Let’s think about the future of railways
- In this creative exhibit room, all visitors have a chance to imagine the future of railways. Make your avatar and go to the world of the future of railways! You can experience the potential of future railways conceived by The Railway Museum through your avatar. But there is not a single set future for railways. The railway you conceive in your dreams may be built for real one day.
