How our OVHcloud Load Balancer works

OVHcloud Load Balancer exposes a fixed, dedicated public IP address for your service and dispatches incoming traffic to backend servers. Backend servers can be any OVHcloud product (Bare-Metal servers, Public Cloud instances, VPS…) and can be located in any DC.

Highest availability for your applications

Unlike the active/passive model, OVHcloud Load Balancer is multi-active, distributed and configured across distinct geographical regions that do not affect one another if an outage occurs. This guarantees maximum availability.

OVHcloud Load balancer robust architecture

Robust, open-source based architecture

OVHcloud Load Balancer is based on HAProxy open-source technology.

This free software, known for its high performance and stability, is a cornerstone for web services such as Twitter, Reddit, Imgur, Instagram, AirBnB and many others.

We are proud to play a part in making open-source products widely available.

List of available regions

OVHcloud Load Balancer is available in the following regions as indicated per the table below. A region is a geographical area composed of one or more datacenters.

Key features

Basic features

A simple, intuitive control panel
Configure and monitor your infrastructures from A to Z with our control panel.

Free SSL encryption
Let's Encrypt DV SSL certificates are included in all of our Load Balancer solutions – completely free – and will activate HTTPS protocol by default.

Global load balancing
A load balancer can be deployed in multiple geographical zones, using the same IP address in each zone. This is particularly useful for global deployments, where you are required to have your users reach the closest available site to assure optimal load times.

Monitoring
Use metrics to monitor your load balancer's load and outgoing requests to your servers. This data can be used to maximise your system’s performance!

Additional IP support
Using an Additional IP as your Load Balancer ingress IP address allows you to mitigate hardware issues, excessive loads on your infrastructures, and much more.

IPv6 support
Every OVHcloud Load balancer comes with a pre-configured, fixed IPv6 address, allowing you to easily make your service IPv6 compliant.

Prioritise your traffic distribution
Optimise the distribution of requests to your servers using various distribution algorithms (the server bearing the smallest load, the last server used by your customer, or depending on the URL). The choice is yours!

Anti-DDoS Infrastructure
Includes our Anti-DDoS Infrastructure protection, specially optimised for load balancing, with powerful mitigation. All TCP connections are analysed in real-time!

Intermediate features

API
Manage your OVHcloud Load Balancer, automate tasks, and integrate your load balancer into your processes and developments using the features available from the OVH and OpenStack API.

HSTS
With HTTP Strict Transport Security, you can effortlessly optimise your websites’ security by using a secure access connection. You won't need to configure anything on your web server – everything is managed by your OVHcloud Load Balancer!

SSL between LB and server farms
Maintain a high level of security and process HTTPS requests by activating SSL on your OVHcloud Load Balancer, as well as between your load balancer and servers!

vRack
Connect the load balancer to your vRack and take advantage of the isolation offered by a private network.

Advanced features

Routing/ACL
Go even further with your OVHcloud Load Balancer! Route, redirect or reject traffic depending on the HTTP method used, or even the value of a cookie or an HTTP header.

Advanced probes
Take advantage of advanced probes to optimise server usage and monitoring. With these probes, you can finely configure the way your load balancer verifies the status of your servers. In this manner, when necessary, you can choose to include a server in the farm, or temporarily remove it to avoid any impact on your service.

Proxy protocol management
With its TCP front-ends and farms, you can track your customers' information and connections to your servers, the same way an HTTP X-Forwarded-For works in HTTP mode.
