Your questions answered

Is my bandwidth usage unlimited?

At OVHcloud, unlimited and unmetered traffic is enabled by default, with the exception of solutions and services hosted our Asia-Pacific datacentres.

What is a dedicated server?

A dedicated server, or computing server, is a machine that allocates all of its hardware resources to the user. Unlike a virtual server, which allocates a portion of the resources to virtualisation technology, a dedicated server offers you all of its RAM, storage, and computing power. This technology can be especially applied to cloud computing. This type of solution emphasises the physical availability of the server’s hardware resources, in contrast to services based on virtual instances.

Which dedicated server should I choose?

Our dedicated server configurations are specially adapted to suit a wide range of professional uses. Depending on your needs, you can opt for more RAM, more storage space, or a faster processor.

OVHcloud dedicated servers also stand out because of their bandwidth capacity and associated services. You can also use our anti-DDoS solution that is adapted for gaming – and our private network (vRack) can be used to connect your dedicated server to your infrastructure, or even hardware RAID. Choose a configuration that best suits your needs.

What should a dedicated server be used for?

There are many uses for a dedicated server: big data, machine learning, website and web application hosting, storage and backup, infrastructure virtualisation, server clusters, business applications (CRM, ERP), and online game hosting. This is why we offer several different dedicated server ranges, each designed for a specific set of needs. Our sales and support teams will help you with your project, and can offer expert advice on which server to choose.

Why is anti-DDoS protection included by default?

At OVHcloud, anti-DDoS protection is a mandatory feature with all our solutions. It guarantees optimal security for your servers and infrastructures, for a variety of reasons:

  • a distributed denial-of-service attack on your machine will affect your business, which may cause a service interruption and even financial loss;
  • When your access is saturated, it can have an impact on the common network, and affect other customers as a result.

How do I choose my datacentre?

OVHcloud Bare Metal servers are available in our network of datacentres across the globe. To host services; we recommend choosing a datacentre that is geographically close to both your customers and main users.

By choosing a location for storing and processing data, you can ensure compliance with local laws and regulations.

When can I order the add-on options offered?

The options are available at the server configuration step. You can also order and enable options directly via the OVHcloud Control Panel, after your service has been delivered.

What do the setup fees include?

The setup fees correspond to the costs of assembling and connecting your server in our datacentres. These upfront fees are only billed once, when the service is set up. This means they are not linked to your commitment period.

The setup fees for your dedicated server are included for any commitment periods of 12 months or longer.

What are the advantages of the vRack private network?

The vRack is a private network that is isolated from the internet. This means you can create your own cluster, or connect your server to an existing infrastructure – and you can do all of this at no extra cost.

Through the vRack private network, you can secure the exchanges between your web server and your database. To do this, you must disable the public IP address of the dedicated server you want to protect.

Compatibility of OVHcloud Advance servers with VMAC

The latest Advance next generation servers, equipped with AMD EPYC 4000 and 8000 CPUs, do not currently support the VMAC feature. This temporary incompatibility is only specific to this latest generation of servers, launched in July 2024. The VMAC feature is essential for setting up virtual machines in bridge mode on your server. This is especially useful in virtualised environments, where multiple virtual machines share a single physical network interface. By assigning a unique virtual MAC address to each virtual machine, network traffic can be successfully routed to the correct virtual machine.

It is important to note that older generation servers are compatible with VMAC. We are aware of how essential this feature is for many users, and we are actively working on integrating it into new servers. Advance servers are expected to be VMAC compatible by the end of 2024. This update will give you greater flexibility and optimised management of your virtual network.

For more information on managing IPs and virtual MACs with OVHcloud, please refer to Network configuration in Proxmox VE. This guide provides instructions for configuring your OVHcloud servers with Proxmox VE to optimise network performance in virtualised environments. This is done using techniques like routing additional IPs via the vRack..

Thank you for your patience and understanding. Stay tuned for future updates on the availability of the VMAC feature on our Advance servers.

Why do OVHcloud Advance servers only use IPs in routed mode and not in bridged mode?

OVHcloud’s latest Advance servers have been optimised, using the routed mode, to offer better security and flexibility in managing IP addresses. There are several advantages to using the routed mode, including security, resilience, and streamlined network management.

  1. Improved isolation: Each server has its own route for IP addresses, reducing the risk of IP conflicts and improving isolation between different machines.
  2. Scalability: Routed mode makes it easier to manage a large number of IPs across multiple servers without the need for complex network configuration changes.
  3. Increased resilience: In the event of a server failure, IPs can be quickly rerouted to another machine, which improves uptime.
  4. Enhanced security: Using separate routes for each IP address lowers the risk of network attacks and optimises access and permission control.

We have provided two detailed guides to help our customers configure their servers and efficiently use IPs in routed mode. These documents provide step-by-step instructions for implementing and managing IP addresses in routed mode on your Advance servers.

Recommended configuration guides:

  1. Additional IPs user guide: The following guide outlines step-by-step instructions for using Additional IPs with OVHcloud services, which includes the setup and management of Load Balancers. It helps you understand how to integrate additional IPs into your infrastructure while ensuring high availability and optimal load balancing.

  2. OVHcloud API guide: This document provides detailed information on using the OVHcloud API to manage IPs on your servers, including the API calls required to move IPs, list failover IPs, and configure frontends for various protocols (HTTP, TCP, UDP).

What is on-die RAM (on-die ECC) and how does it differ from conventional ECC RAM?

Advance servers come with on-die RAM:

Error Correction Code (ECC) is a technology used to protect data integrity by correcting bit errors that may occur during data transmission between the controller and memory. Traditional ECC RAM detects and corrects single-bit errors and can detect double-bit errors, making it essential to ensure the reliability of critical systems.

On-die ECC is a specific DDR5 memory feature that provides additional protection by correcting bit errors inside the DRAM chip before data is sent to the processor (CPU). Here are the key differences between on-die ECC RAM and traditional ECC RAM, as well as the benefits of each:

Traditional ECC RAM:

  • Data in transit protection: Traditional ECC RAM corrects single-bit errors and detects double-bit errors during data transmission between memory and controller.
  • Critical system security: This is ideal for mission-critical systems where data reliability is paramount, such as servers, workstations and compute-intensive systems.

Practical applications: The use of on-die ECC alone has proven to be effective in environments where servers with 32 GB or 64 GB of RAM are used for non-critical applications or moderate workloads, without significantly compromising data reliability.

On-die ECC RAM:

  • Internal error correction: On-die ECC RAM corrects bit errors inside the DRAM chip before data is transmitted to the CPU, improving the individual reliability of the chips.
  • Flip bit management: As DRAM chips shrink in size, memory cells become more susceptible to bit flips. With on-die ECC, these flips are effectively managed, ensuring that more cells meet JEDEC specifications.
  • Increased reliability: By correcting errors within the memory itself, on-die ECC reduces faults and improves reliability, which is particularly crucial for high-density memory modules.
  • Cost reduction: On-die ECC technology allows for more reliable technology scaling, resulting in lower production costs and increased reliability for high density memories.

Summary: On-die ECC RAM is not a substitute for traditional ECC RAM; instead it provides an extra layer of error protection specifically for memory chips. While traditional ECC continues to play a crucial role in protecting data in transit, on-die ECC makes modern high-density memories more reliable by correcting errors as soon as they appear in the chip.

For OVHcloud customers using the latest Advance servers, this means more reliable memory and lower failure costs, which is vital for mission-critical applications and high-performance environments.
