A city of culture
Located at the foothills of the Alps, Torino is a vibrant and constantly evolving city that, over the past decades, has strongly changed its image. After a century as an automotive capital, Torino has diversified its ambitions focusing on industries with high-knowledge content, boosting research and innovation in particular in strategic areas such as automotive, ICT, aerospace, biomedical and high quality food. Awarded in 2014 as UNESCO Creative City for Design, Torino combines its historical industrial profile with new vocations in the fields of research and technology, education and knowledge, culture and arts. Torino boasts over 40 museums as well as the Savoy Royal Residences –UNESCO World Heritage Site; fascinating churches and places of worship and the mystery of the Holy Shroud; two thousand years of architecture along with modern design; contemporary art in its various forms and 18km of arcades for shopping in the city centre as well as Europe’s largest open-air market.
A sports tradition
Torino is a city with a long-standing tradition in sport and wellbeing investing to provide more and more opportunities to professionals and sport amateurs. In Torino the first Italian sporting groups and national federations were born. The Velodrome Umberto I hosted the first official Italian Football Championship in 1898 and other disciplines have become well established like fencing, shooting, cycling, skating, ice hockey, skiing and rowing, thanks to the presence of the great river Po and the nearby mountains.
A sports vocation
Scrolling through its more recent history, the city has been the site of major events: from the 1990 Football World Cup to the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, the Winter Universiade in 2007 to the World Master Games in 2013 in addition to being awarded the title of European Capital of Sport in 2015. Thanks to its cutting-edge sports and entertainment facilities, Torino has been chosen as the perfect stage to host the Nitto ATP Finals (2021-2025), the Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Champions League Finals (May 2023) and the XXXII World University Winter Games in 2025.
