Joan Smith played many sports as a youth, competing in soccer, track, cross-country skiing, and golf. She was named to the US Biathlon team in 1985 when she was only 17-years-old. Smith competed at five World Championships. She graduated from Nazareth College in 1985. Her husband, Allan Miller, was a science teacher who later became a finalist as an educator astronaut with NASA, and then served as a scientist on several research cruises to Antarctica.
