Hugo Perez was born in El Salvador but came to the United States in his teens and played football (soccer) for the US national team from 1984-94. He played for the US both at the 1984 Olympics and the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Perez did not attend college but began playing professionally in 1982 with the Los Angeles Aztecs of the North American Soccer League (NASL). His career lasted until 1996 and saw him play with the Tampa Bay Rowdies (1982-83), the San Diego Sockers (both indoors and outdoors), the Los Angeles Heat (1986, 1989), Red Star Paris (1990), Örgryte IS (Sweden) (1990-91), Al-Ittihad (Saudi Arabia) (1992), the Los Angeles Salsa (1994), and he finished his career with CD FAS in his native El Salvador in 1994-96.
Both his father and grandfather had placed for FAS (Club Deportivo Futbolistas Asociados Santanecos). Perez later became a soccer coach, first at the University of San Francisco and then with the San Francisco Victory. He was elected to the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2008.
