Katie Okamoto
I am an editor at Wirecutter focused on sustainability and environmental health.
I focus on the intersections of shopping, sustainability, and environmental health. I also lead and advise on standards for reporting on environmental impacts and green marketing claims of products in Wirecutter’s coverage.
Since joining Wirecutter in 2021, I’ve written and edited across a range of topics, from allergies to yoga mats to microplastics. Since 2022, I’ve led Wirecutter’s sustainability coverage and standards, building on more than a decade spent covering products—from food to furniture—and their intersections with environmental issues, health, and culture.
Previously, I was an editor at Metropolis, an architecture and design magazine, with a focus on sustainability and health. My freelance writing has been published by The New York Times, Eater, Bon Appétit, Taste, and Newsweek.
I earned a master’s degree in architecture from Columbia (where I contributed to a book on design and climate change, The Underdome Guide to Energy Reform) and a BA in environmental studies from Brown. I also hold a certificate in life cycle assessment from MIT. In past lives, I’ve worked in design, environmental management, and radio. I currently live in Los Angeles.
As a Wirecutter journalist, I share the values and adhere to the standards of integrity outlined in our editorial standards. In accordance with Wirecutter’s ethics policy, I never keep products after testing is completed and do not accept products that aren’t meant for testing. I don’t accept gifts, money, or favors from any person, company, or entity that might figure into our news coverage.
