What Is Russia’s Oreshnik Ballistic Missile?
The weapon used for the first time against Ukraine last week is capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
By Lara Jakes
For the last two years, I have written about the weapons that the West is producing and sending to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia’s invasion. I have reported from Kyiv, NATO headquarters, European capitals and the United States to detail military and industrial efforts to maintain Ukraine’s arsenal.
I also contribute to ongoing coverage of the war in Gaza, as well as the diplomacy and geopolitics of other Middle East countries, including Iran.
I have been a reporter and editor for nearly 30 years, including as a war correspondent based in Iraq and a reporter in Washington covering diplomacy, counterterrorism and defense policy. I’ve covered conflicts in Afghanistan, Egypt, Israel and the West Bank, Iraq, Northern Ireland and Ukraine, and have reported from more than 70 countries since graduating from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. I joined The Times in 2017 after working at Foreign Policy magazine, The Associated Press and the Albany Times-Union.
I am a mom, a retired military spouse and a runner.
I believe in the Journalist’s Creed, from Walter Williams, who wrote that “the public journal is a public trust; that all connected with it are, to the full measure of their responsibility, trustees for the public; that acceptance of a lesser service than the public service is betrayal of this trust. I believe that clear thinking and clear statement, accuracy and fairness are fundamental to good journalism.”
More specifically, I adhere to the standards of integrity outlined in The Times’s Ethical Journalism handbook.
