Dave Butz of the Redskins, who had been the oldest starting player in the National Football League, yesterday announced his retirement in Washington. The decision of the 38-year-old defensive tackle to retire had been rumored for several months even though he had another year remaining on his two-year contract that would bring him $550,000 next season. Butz played in 216 N.F.L. games. He was credited with 59 1/2 career sacks, second-highest total in Redskin history. (AP)
