Nell Carter Returns
Nell Carter, whose volcanic exuberance in the show ''Ain't Misbehavin'' earned her a 1978 Tony Award for best featured actress in a musical, will return to the New York stage on Friday for the first time in more than five years with a revue at the Village Gate. In her show, ''Nell Carter Live,'' which is scheduled for a nine-day run, the singer will be accompanied by an 11-piece singing and dancing group, the Raisinettes, performing a program that ranges all the way from songs by Sophie Tucker and Alberta Hunter to contemporary pop ballads like the Eagles' ''Desperado.''
''Because we've got 60 to 80 songs to choose from, every show will be different,'' Ms. Carter said last week. ''If I see the audience is getting bored, I'll just switch gears.''
Ms. Carter is in the ironic position of being far more famous for her six-year stint on the television sitcom ''Gimme a Break'' than for her skills as a musical entertainer.
''I don't want to go to my grave being known as the girl from 'Gimme a Break,'' the singer and actress emphasized. ''That wasn't me; it was just a job.''
If all goes according to plan, Ms. Carter will return to Broadway in August in a revival of ''Ain't Misbehavin' '' featuring the original cast.
''After that I have two offers for Broadway shows, but with my luck they'll dig up some dead actress and paint her up and put her in my stead,'' she said. Songwriters' Fame
