There were present 250 "top journalists" at least that's how they are referred to locally from France, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Spain, England, Argentina, Mexico, Canada and the U. S., all come to witness this doubleheader, "Summertime," starring Katharine Hepburn and Rossano Brazzi, presented by Lopert Films in association with United Artists. Miss Hepburn, now touring in Australia, was not at the event, but her co-star Rossano Brazzi, Italy's most popular male movie star, a former boxer and professional soccer player, crescendoed the female heartbeat. After the picture had been shown and as the audience filed out, he stood at the head of the stairs leading from the theater and handed each lady present a fresh, white gardenia. It is hard to visualize a Terry Becomes slippers tossed everywhere, bed bundled up carelessly, skirts hanging from rods, and her one obvious desire is to get away from me and out of the house as soon as she can. She called me •Mrs. Beckwith' until her father told her he would give her a sound whipping if he heard i it again; now she calls me 'Aunt Ann' which I hate. But Van usually takes her side in everything and often asks me to the kid a break. That he fell in love with before he got his divorce is a fact, and Lina knows it, but is that so unusual a situation? It happens every, day. Van, and Lina's mother had reached the parting of the ways long before that. As to the film itself - its American premiere is June 21, at the Astor Theater in New York. It is based on the famous Broadway hit "Time of the Cuckoo," by Arthur Laurents, which starred Shirley Booth and won for her the Oscar of the theater. Those who have already seen both the theater and movie version of this story of the 35-yearold American secretary who had never had a real love affair and who uses her life-savings for a trip to Venice in quest of a possible romance, find the yarn enriched by the movie. But Italians are the most gracious people. P Better get acquainted with Rossano Brazzi. He has already been seen with Ava Gardner in "The Barefoot Contessa;" with Maggie MacNamara in "Three Coins in a Fountain!" with Linda Darnell in "The Last 5 Minutes," and now, after "Summertime", with Katharine Hepburn, he has only to make one picture with Grace Kelly. WANT MUCH MORE. Movie audiences are greedy; always wanting more and more. In the past it was enough to offer a good story and fine actors. Now they've been spoiled into wanting much more specially written with music, as in wistful "Summer time", haunting, odies composed into a musical montage embodying many Venetian sounds, composed by Maestro Alessandra Cigogni; wide screens showing panoramic views of areas hitherto to be caught in one camera. as if that were unable, not enough, the precedent has now been set by three or four films showing the beauties and wonders of an entire city in one film. "Three Coins in the Fountain" made Rome come alive to millions who had never been there. "Gentlemen Marry Brunettes" has done the same for MOTHER'S HELPER BY HEIMANN & PEARSON.
