Jackson Sun CRUNCH Saturday, October 20, 2001 Bruceton Continued from cover HELEN COMER/The Jackson Sun Westview's Grant Rooks runs around a North Side defender on Friday in North Indians Continued from cover "We gave them two shots right there. We were OK up to that point, but we dug a hole that we couldn't get out of." The Chargers did try. Westview quarterback P.R. Wilson and Tennesseesignee Justin Harrell hooked up for their second TD of the night. The two had a 52- yarder that gave the Chargers a 7-3 lead in the second. The next was a 41-yarder that pulled them to 31-24. The teams exchanged field goals, with C.W. West's 38- yarder making, it a 34-27 game with to go. His onside kick, however, curled back around and North Side ran out the clock. Wilson, who had thrown for 887 yards coming in, finished with 177 passing yards as the Indians' defense keyed on Hill. "Their defensive line just whipped our offensive line," Coady said. "We'd get some of them blocked, but miss some others. Their nose guard is tough.' That be Demetrius Bray. Bray headed to the locker room at halftime reminding his defensive mates that the Indians still had plenty of time left. 1 WESTVIEN "Their defensive line just whipped our offensive line. We'd get some of them blocked, but miss some others. Their nose guard is tough." Don Coady, Westview coach In that first half, North Side's opening drive stalled inside the Westview 5 and the Indians settled for Bell's 20-yard field goal. Westview came right back. Wilson and Harrell hooked up on a 52-yard touchdown strike on a dump pass four plays and two minutes later. Five plays after that, Andrew Laney picked off Exline and returned the ball 46 yards for a touchdown and a 14-3 lead. The Chargers actually had a chance to throw the knockout punch on the next series. Jason Davis intercepted Exline four plays into the next series, and the Chargers needed only 29 yards to reach the end zone. Although they converted on fourth-and-11 at the 30 and reached the 4, the Chargers settled for a 27- yard field goal. Hill was stuffed three times inside the 5. A 68-yard touchdown run by Cole, who finished with a game-high 138 rushing yards, helped narrow 1 the margin. "We worked all week on the running game. He had had 100-yard running games over other schools. We wanted to shut him down to 50 yards. I told the defense that if they score, don't keep your heads down because that's when you lose games. At halftime, I told the defense to pick it up a notch. And we did." Said Wilson, the Westview quarterback, "That's probably the best defense we've seen all year. They were quick and fast, better than an average defense. We just had to bring our A game tonight and didn't do it." North Side 3 7 21 3- 34 Westview 14 3 N First Quarter NS- Josh Bell 20 field goal. "I knew our offense could score on their defense, but I thought we had to step up our defense a notch." And it did. The Yellowjackets earned just seven first downs i in the game and lost three of four fumbles. Their longest sustained drive went nine plays and 24 yards, and they got no closer than the Tigers' 40-yard line. "We've played better, but we played well tonight," Tigers coach Rod Sturdivant said. "I think the difference was our ability to throw the ball. We've got kids who can catch the ball and make things happen." That was never more apparent than on the Tigers' opening drive. After Jamison gained 35 yards and Jonte Willis ran for another six, quarterback Rick Sturdivant found Patrick Willis running an out-route to the right corner of the end zone for a 23- yard touchdown. Adam Olds kicked the point after to give Bruceton all the points it would need. But it wasn't all they would get. After forcing the Yellowjackets to punt, the Tigers went on a deliberate, timeconsuming 17-play, 75-yard drive that ate nearly 7:00 off the clock. Jamison capped the drive with a seven yard run and dive into the end zone. Then on their next possession, Sturdivant hit Willis again, this time down the left sideline, for a 31-yard scoring strike. Right before halftime, Jamison would scoot in from two yards out, giving Bruceton a 28-0 lead. The Tigers converted on their first six third down tries, and Greenfield coach Hal Blackman knew his Yellowjackets were in for a long night. "There was just no stopping them tonight," he said. "They're just physically stronger and quicker than we are, Patrick Grooms, who came into Friday's game against than nine yards a carry, was held to 30 by the Tigers' Greenfield its first loss of the season, 49-0. Jonte Willis, a senior, saw his first cousin, sophomore Patrick, score a couple touchdowns, and wasn't about to be outdone. He also was determined to prove a point to the Yellowjackets. "They kept talking and their fans kept talking, but we just stayed quiet and played football," Jonte said. "This is my first time to score two touchdowns, and it felt wonderful ... Patrick's a decent ballplayer and he makes me want to play that much harder." The Tigers went up 35-0 when Jonte scampered in from 15 and 2 yards out in the third quarter, and Keith McGee added a 23-yard score late in the fourth. KIMILY TAYLOR/The Jackson Sun Greenfield running back Bruceton averaging more defense. Bruceton handed and they were determined. I've said all along they were playing at a level above everybody else. I feel like we're making strides, but we're not there yet." Indeed, Greenfield has made great strides from a year ago, when the Yellowjackets struggled through a 2-8 campaign. While an undefeated season is no longer possible, the Yellowjackets are assured a playoff spot. "We've had a heck of a year, and this one loss is not going to deter us from enjoying it," Blackman said. "We're sitting in a pretty good spot and we're going to get ready to try to win a few more I think our kids will ... respond to this." Next week, the Tigers finish the regular season with Gleason, while Greenfield plays West Carroll.
