In April 2023, the PALS Office announced that Minnesota State would provide funding for all thirty-three (33) of their institutions to implement Third Iron’s LibKey suite of products at no cost to their local library. While eleven (11) of our libraries already had it implemented prior to April 2023, the other twenty-two (22) institutions took the opportunity to add the LibKey suite of products after this funding was announced. PALS worked with Third Iron and our libraries to implement the LibKey suite. The last Minnesota State library implemented the LibKey products in February 2024.

Third Iron’s Libkey Complete products include:

  • Browzine allows browsing and reading a wide variety of the Electronic Journals your library subscribes to as  well as a curated selection of Open Access Journals
  • Libkey Discovery integration into Primo provides simple direct linking to many journal articles from all of your library’s electronic databases
  • Libkey Nomad browser extension connects patrons to library content wherever they may be searching on the Internet. Third Iron provides instructions on how your campus IT department can deploy LibKey Nomad across your campus computers using Microsoft Group Policies.

Libkey’s OpenURL linking can also be applied in other places, including:

  • EBSCO, Gale, ProQuest, and other Databases where you may already have links back to Primo for Full Text or Resource Sharing requests
  • PubMed (after setting up PubMed’s Otool)
  • Google Scholar

Third Iron’s Academic Libraries Success Guide has instructions and promotional materials for making the most of their services based on strategies used by other Academic Libraries at https://thirdiron.com/success-guide/academic-libraries/

If you have questions or would like assistance in adding any of these LibKey or Browzine features to your library website, please open a case in the PALS Support Center.

After receiving a report about incompatibilities between the Broken Link Reporting form and screen reading software, several people worked together to identify the issues, implement code, and test the form. The Broken Link Reporting form is now compatible with screen reader software and is being deployed to all MnPALS member Primo VE instances who use it.

This collaboration is a prime example of MnPALS members working with PALS Office staff to ensure we are serving patrons appropriately. Special thanks to William for both identifying the issue and working with us to fix the form, thus improving the end user experience for many people. The team was:

  • Perry Madden, Support and Training Specialist at PALS
  • Simon Mai, Information System Developer and Integrator at PALS
  • William Straub, Systems and Digital Services Librarian at St. Catherine University

In order to support affordability efforts in libraries, Senior Vice Chancellor Green-Stephen agreed to fund Third Iron’s LibKey Complete for all institutions in Minnesota State beginning in July of 2023. This is ongoing funding that acknowledges that improving infrastructure can reduce barriers to access to research resources.

According to Third Iron’s website, “When the point of discovery is within the library, in services like databases and discovery layers, our services simplify and expedite how users get to full text. When research starts outside the library, at sites like Google and ResearchGate, Third Iron technology identifies and seamlessly connects users to library full text.”  https://thirdiron.com/aboutus/

Two pieces of the implementation include:

  1. There is code that the PALS Office adds to the library’s Primo VE (search) instance to add the LibKey Discovery functionality. This integrates with most major vendors and reduces the number of clicks and broken links to provide one-click access to PDFs.
  1. LibKey Nomad, (includes demo video for user) a browser extension that brings library paid resources to the searcher when they start searching outside of the library webpage/search, can be added to machine images on campuses and students can download the extension for access outside of the campus network.

As of today, 29 of the 33 colleges and universities in Minnesota State have implemented the Discovery functionality, and six institutions have implemented the Nomad functionality. As the year progresses, we will work with Third Iron to leverage the analytics regarding the usage of the software and identify any improvements in access made by using LibKey Complete.

When last we provided an update about the transition from Islandora 7, we were working with information regarding the early phases of community-led development. If you know anything about the open source world, you know that it can change quite a bit, and now seems like a good time to update you on the project.

Recent Progress:

We’ve had some recent successes with new users: MN Department of Transportation and Minnesota State Law Library and we are currently working with Minneapolis College of Art & Design to migrate from their self-hosted Islandora 7.

  1. What’s all this business about Islandora 2? I thought it was called Islandora 8! The community named it Islandora 8 because it was a continuation of the original Islandora project. Later, the community decided that given the complete rewrite of the software to take better advantage of the Drupal ecosystem it made more sense to think of this project as Islandora 2.
  2. Who is working on this project? Why am I hearing from Dani? An outside contractor reviewed PALS operations which indicated that we needed to think differently about staffing to meet member needs. We had a gap in another area of support, and the Islandora support position could be sustained with a .5 position. Our metadata and cataloging expert, Dani Kroon, stepped into the Islandora role as of July 1, 2022. We thank Alex Kent for his dedication to Islandora over the years!
  3. Weren’t we going to try to establish more of a community within the PALS-supported Islandora group? Yes! And to that end, Dani scheduled a meeting for March 22 where all of the institutions can meet the team. Also, they will hear about the progress of the team, learn about approximate timelines, and talk about what kind of work can be done in advance.

We look forward to the ongoing migration process and can’t wait to see the results of the work!

P.S. Read more about Islandora by PALS here.

After a rigorous development and review process, the PALS Islandora team, consisting of Rod Bruce, Dani Kroon, and Simon Mai, is pleased to announce that the department’s first Islandora 2 site has gone live. Click here to view

The team has worked diligently over the last few months to accommodate unexpected delays in community-led development due to the pandemic, changes to responsibilities, and other major PALS-related initiatives to successfully bring the Minnesota Department of Transportation’s (MnDOT) project to fruition.

Dani, our Support and Training Librarian for Islandora, has this to say about the process:

“The initial word that springs to mind is chaotic, but once I take a breath and think about the process, I am amazed at what we accomplished. Go-live times are always a bit messy. Invariable unforeseen issues arise that require troubleshooting on the fly. Another look at the system brings up additional questions. It is the nature of go-live.

I appreciated working with the MnDOT team, who had a vision for their Islandora site and its functionality. They asked the questions that, as a result, helped make their Islandora 2 instance a better site.

In the PALS office, I appreciate working with the Islandora Team: Rod Bruce, and Simon Mai, who made MnDOT’s site happen, implementing changes, updating the software, and calmly troubleshooting last-minute problems.

It takes a village to get a new software product off the ground.”

Sheila Hatchell, MnDOT Library Director, says:

“I love how the site looks, how responsive it is, how easy it is to make changes/corrections, and that everything is immediate.  I am particularly excited about the photos to see where that collection goes, as well as our historical newsletter collection which has fantastic information in it.”

PALS has provided hosting and support to Islandora since 2012. If you are interested in what we could do for you, please contact us. Also, Read more about Islandora by PALS here.
