Traditions and History

From P&O to Matador Ranch and Cattle

Join us in our journey to develop the world's most innovative ranch.

P&O Ranch

P&O Ranch

The story of the Beaverhead Ranch begins with Phillip Poindexter and William Orr. In 1865, Orr drove a portion of his herd into Montana but unable to winter near Bannack, he trailed the cattle into the lower Beaverhead on Blacktail Creek. Amazed at how the cattle flourished on the nutritious and varied grasses native to the area, Orr and Poindexter brought over the remainder of the herd from Shasta Valley in California to the Beaverhead Valley until they had their entire stock business located along Blacktail Creek.

Koch Beef Company’s Matador Cattle Company purchased the ranch in 1951, and expanded it over the next 70 years through innovation and excellent business practices. Spanning 50 miles from north to south, the ranch included 340,000 acres, 113,000 of which remain deeded and include grazing rights on approximately 226,000 leased acres. Matador Cattle Co. won numerous environmental and ecological awards and Koch Industries continually strived to work with personnel to create an extensive and profitable cattle ranch while enhancing the native ecosystem.

In December 2021, Rupert Murdoch purchased the iconic Beaverhead and Selkirk Ranches that made up Matador Cattle Co., merging them into what is now Matador Ranch and Cattle. Murdoch’s vision of joining two ranches offers a unique opportunity to advance and improve an already robust cattle operation on a one-of-a-kind scenic and resource-abundant landscape. Murdoch recognized the significance of the land he acquired, the depth of its history, and its importance in the area's ecosystem. He intends to use their resources to pioneer advances in the agriculture industry while working with nature to enhance the already thriving landscape.

Innovation

Pushing the envelope of agricultural innovation

While MRC stands rooted in the experience of those who came before us, our vision is to combine that essential knowledge with new-age solutions and cutting-edge ideas to build resilience and keep the ranching industry thriving for generations to come.
