Born in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1857, Taft had a long career in public service. He served as solicitor general of the U.S. (1890-92), judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit (1892-1900), governor-general of the Philippines (1901-03) U.S. secretary of war (1904-08), and chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court (1921-30). In 1908, Taft was elected the twenty-seventh president of the United States (1909-13). Taft was defeated for reelection in 1912.
