The Matrix (1999)
30 December 2011
This film is so incredibly famous and I had never seen it until this day. That's because I had never really cared for the hype but of course I wanted to get an impression of this oh-so-extraordinary futuristic drama someday.
I watched and got disappointed. The action scenes did not convince me, the story became incredibly lame near the end, I'm not really fond of Keanu Reeves, none of the characters were appealing to me except Hugo Weaving(♥) as Agent Smith, the soundtrack wasn't that special. Only Neo's clothes looked kinda cool and the setting wasn't that bad. To me it's an average film since it's still entertaining but it's not worth all the praise in my opinion.

I had no idea what this film was about. Something about Aliens but that was it. And then I got drawn into a very sweet story with a completely self-sacrificing and determined protagonist. The concept is great and inventive, the animations look pretty good and at times the there are extemely beautiful totale shots. It impressed me so much because I had completely no expectations. The only thing that was bothersome that onnly after half of the film I realized that one was supposed to understand the aliens and that my subtitles just weren't switched on automatically. But that was the DVD's fault after all. (probably because it was the German/European version)

A Burton classic that I've finally managed to see.
An adorable little love story and great character designs was what made this film so charming. Of course also the Burton atmosphere every now and then. I had expected something darker but it was lovely like this.
THIS Edward is one I'd run after, screaming like a fangirl, because he is just so cute.

I find it hard to comment on this film for some reason. I really enjoyed it. Really! The characters, the acting, the setting, the methods of filming, the usage of sounds and music, the story, the atmosphere...it was all very impressive and deep. Then why only 4 stars? I can't say, somehow it wasn't perfect to me although there's nothing wrong with it. Strange, huh?

After this film I once again know why Guy Ritchie is my favourite director! The second part of Sherlock Holmes' adventurous case solving is a brilliantly balanced mixture of witty humour and impressive action. Charming characters, the old ones as well as the new ones, a beautiful and atmospheric music composed by Hans Zimmer and a coherent setting. (I totally need this one on DVD as well C;)

I just HAD to! I don't care how flawed this film is, it is so much fun because of that (except for a certain comedian...)! And it contains so many awesome quotes, such as "Put that cookie down! NAO!", "It's Turbo-Time!" and "You've got the doll, right?". Hahaha, I'm glad I watched this, really! But it's kinda hard to rate.

I was forced to watch this in class and fortunately we didn't even manage to finish the film. It's exactly that kind of humour I find ungodly nerve-racking and unfunny. So at last I hadn't have to to sit through the whole film.
I'm not keen on knowing how the story continues but I bet it won't get any better.

It was indeed very sad but also very beautiful (since those attributes go hand in hand). The up-to-date topic was handled very well and the actors did a good job. It had that constant change of pace (lively to quiet to lively and so on) but that made it interesting although at first I had to get used to it.

The film started out rather loud and and jumbled but that didn't last very long. Soon one tragedy followed the next and turned into a beautiful, powerful piece of art with a fascinating message. It makes you think a lot and it is completely realistic as it shows the truth about people and their behaviour in this world. It is incredibly touching! It hard to get past shedding a tear or two.

A perfect conclusion to the Ubisoft's game "Assassin's Creed Revelations". It is heart-breaking, that is for sure. The beautiful animation, the creative plot and the atmospheric music do contribute to that. That is also why I immediately came to love it.

A film watched in class. Our English teacher though it was a oh so interesting and educational. But in our class' eyes it was a big yawn and a real pain to sit through. I'm just not interested in economics that much so a documentary about it obviously makes me got to sleep. Looking at it subjectively it probably isn't that badly done but who cares- it's NOT my kind of thing.

It was Twin Peak'ish but not as much as the series. At a certain point it dragged on for quite some time but in the end the film provided a lot of additional information to the show. When one deciphered it right at least. I was disappointed that Donna's actress got exchanged because that destroyed a lot of the character.
But it was still enjoyable and messed with your head in the good old Lynch way.

Holy muffins, what a film...
Completely sick and lunatic, and yet so fantastic and clever. Great choice of actors and beautiful rememberable music.
I couldnt look away and the more the film continued the more it shook me. It's a fascination risen from disgust, despair and dismay as well. A masterpiece of impressiveness.

Hell (2011)
29 September 2011
Oh my god, this film is impressive! It's german and it's brilliant, that's already fascinating. Thrilling until the last second, in a not so unrealistic and very dark setting and so much believability concerning the characters. The camera work was incredibly good as well. And although the film was very shocking, in the end there was the message of hope. Hats off, I am blown away.
[By the way, the title means 'Light' in German. So the opposite of 'dark' is meant but one could also interpret the meaning of a hell they are going through.]

Lovely concept for a film and I loved the individual characters. Though child acting isn't always that great, this one was convincing and the dancing was impressive.
And although it wasn't a film that completely blew my mind but it made me feel with the characters and delivered an overall feeling of happiness.

Wow, this film was indeed very impressive. Very thrilling and creatively depicted plot with a great turnover.
(although I could still predict what it would be like)
It was funny that after watching Insomnia I actually watched another film involving the disorder- without me knowing beforehand. And it also reminded me a lot of Fight Club at times. However, it's a brilliant film not least because of Christian Bale outstanding performance.
The soundtrack is alright and the film just keeps you captured: I always wanted to know what happens next and my eyes were glued to the TV screen so to say.

Quite a nice film with a good cast. But as stupid as it may sound, I expected something more complex from Nolan. I mean, Insomnia was a great, thrilling crime film but I always expected a sudden turnover at some point. Not every film has to be highly sophisticated but I dunno, probably I just had the wrong expectations (Inception has spoiled me forever now C;). Nevertheless I enjoyed Insomnia very much.

One big masterpiece of a TV series. The incredibly original characters (which had the ideal cast), mesmerising music and extremely thrilling plot are prefected by the Lynch-ness- crazy, absurd, sick and yet so appealing and clever elements. It's a classic and a must-watch!

Well, going with the sequel formula this one wasn't as good as Kill Bill 2. The story was a bit more stereotypical but there was less pep. The first one was just more rememberable I guess. But now enlightened by the giraffe I know that the 3rd film might make a good sequel that I'm looking forward to.

This one of the films that doesn't really call for using your brain too much. But instead one gets kick-ass action scenes and legendary quotes and theme songs. And although actually I find too much gore very unneccessary it didn't bother me any further. I loved the Japanese and though I had to get used to the overall presentation I ended up liking it.

I really don't like Superman. Never liked the comic so I never wanted to watch a film as well. But Kevin Spacey and James Marsden tempted me. Afterwards I knew I shouldn't have given in. It was a relatively boring and unspectacular. Way too predictable, may it be the story or the characters and their actions. Spacey and Marsden unfortunately couldn't save the film either.

So of course I needed to watch the sequel as well and somehow it's always the same: The second part is always worse than the first. This once actually had everything the first one had, but somehow it was a bit too overdramatic at times and the story just didn't appeal to me as much as the original one. But it definitely is a great film anyways.

Well, it was a bit confusing but I like clever, confusing films. The symbolism is what really appealed to me, and although the pace of the film is rather slow I know that it probably wouldn't work any other way. Definitely a pice of work to think about.

The climax wasn't very exciting and the whole film plodded along. In the end I didn't even get a significant message out of it. There are way better films dealing with the topic of the 3rd Reich in my opinion.

I still prefer "my" old Disney Classics but 'Bolt' surely is worth watching :)

What a weird film...
The first 30 minutes I thought it might be very interesting and complex. And it was also quite creepy.
Then it got just absurd and dubious.
Although the story turned out to be exciting and the ending as surprisingly intense, it's way too long. So often I just wanted to stop watching but I actually despise quitting halfway.
So the film is in fact very disturbing but all the supernatural stuff makes it less believable and drags it on.

But still, even without the outtakes and sqashing in of as much naked skin as possible, it's similar to an American Pie film. And I'm not really a fan of those.

What the hell is it with this film? Did the director even read the book? There is as good as no originality to it, the characters behave out of character and most of them are not cast very fittingly.
The picture is ridiculous and everything seems so forgettable. A disgrace to Oscar Wilde's work. :/

I did read all the books with joy and I'm not a fan of what David Yates has done with the latest parts of the franchise. And after the tremendous disappointment of the 6th film it sure was hard to completely save the 7th one.
My complete opinion can be read here but in short:
it was way too rushed, way too over-dramatic and didn't conclude the story of Harry Potter rightfully.
Still it was an entertaining film so far, there were a lot of good scenes. Just considering that it's the end of the end...makes it so underwhelming.

Some more interesting story aspects, yay!
Some absurd ones as well (but I didn't read the comic so I'm not one to talk). Also no more Scott Summers. That ruined the film for me halfway.
Though it was all very predictable it was a decent finale for the trilogy. And seeing Magneto control metal is always entertaining.

I decided to continue the X-Men marathon since it's a trilogy and c'moon I can't just ignore the sequels.
And surprisingly I liked the second X-Men film a bit better. It was less abrupt and more thrilling.
Way too little James Marsden/Scott aka Cyclops appearances though.
Ian McKellen was there to make up for his absence at least. ;) Unfortunately he action scenes didn't get better. :(

Everyone seems to have watched it so I decided to go with the flow. Okay, primarily because James Marsden is in it. But also because I really like the idea of the X-men story. And that's exactly the only thing that appealed to me. I was shocked that the action scenes were so bad- so unconvincing. But most of the actors were wonderful.
I was especially fascinated by Ian McKellen as Magneto. I became so fond of him.

Wow! 24th Day really surprised me. I randomly stumbled across it and although it's a low budget film it was quite fascinating. The setting is simple, there's not much over-the-top action but that is what makes it so believable. Both actors do a really great job and the statements of the film are very touching and interesting.
The only thing that bothered me a bit were the weird cuts and fadings.
But it's definitely a film more people should discover.

It's probably fatal to watch this after the remake but that's exactly what I did.
I mean, the new one is kind of a guilty pleasure film to me so I permanently compared the two. And since I'm a child of the newer generation I always came to prefer the more recent film.
My mother said: "It's a Z-film, it's supposed to be like that. That's why it's good!"
I'm afraid I can't agree with that. In my opinion 90% of the actors did horribly and the plot was all messy- there was this pile of pointless moments. Also nothing was the least bit charming. I learned to love the new version once again after watching the 1988's-one, however cheesy or "too perfect" or forced it may seem.
The old one just made me facepalm...I guess I'm just not that much into Z-films.

This film is some kind of a legend so finally managed to watch it. And it is indeed incredibly beautiful. The way it's filmed, the colours, the setting, the actors. Everything is so lovely and charming, it's such a pleasure to watch Amélie's extraordinary world. :)
I always though it was overrated but now I know better.
And I dunno, the french makes it even more likeable.

What a sweet film. Although it gets quite cheesy at times I found myself getting attached to all the individual characters (or strongly dislikeing certain ones).
The whole setting was just so charming and Johnny Depp's appearance also didn't hurt. ;)

The introduction was already quite nice. And then more and more inventive plot line was built up. And at the very end there came a turnover with a turnover, brilliant! (although I had a feeling it would turn out like that but it was still impressive)
Great actor choices and the music was very becoming. :D
Kevin was my favourite though; an amazing character which he played fantastically.

For a long time I had wanted to watch this film.
And it was completely different than I had imagined it.
The first half didn't really capture me because the transitions totally threw me off the course and the music was just too much and not fitting. But the second half had the opposite effect.
It became thrilling and all the effects seemed to be adjusted just fine. The film became really creepy.
But there's another thing that was terribly annoying:
Shelley Duvall's awful acting. And Danny Lloyd wasn't much better.
The only brilliant performance in "The Shining" was delivered by Jack Nicholson. But it doesn't work with just one good actor, however brilliant he might be.
But anyways the film left me with a great interest so I seem to have enjoyed it. Probably because there's so much mystery going on that I want to ponder over.

Wow, this really is a masterpiece of a film. Brilliant depiction and fantastic, thrilling plot. I didn't read the book but the film had me convinced. It fully captured me and I totally became attached to all the different characters and actually kinda felt with them.
The climax and the very end did really surprise and shock me and made me feel so melancholic.
So yeah, very impressive indeed!

This film was surprisingly underwhelming, without me having any expectations beforehand. That may be because of my English class though. We covered every single topic touched upon in this film in class a thousand times. So the film felt like a whole big repetition once AGAIN.
The actors didn't really capture me, though that doesn't mean they were bad. So I was left in the cinema completely unmoved. Meh.

An...interesting film. It's something you have to let yourself in for first in my opinion. If you don't you will automatically dislike it.
It's true, there's much obscenity going on which is not always of much use. But the story isn't too bad, it's actually a romance under certain different circumstances. The city is presented in an inventive style and the music is also kinda good.
But still the whole film felt a bit slow-paced and very over the top at times. And also the actors weren't really mind-blowing. In the end I didn't draw any lessons from it or did see a further use to its existence.
Strangely enough a high amount of german critics/magazines/newspapers highly praised it.

Very nice and believable acting, a great bunch of good music (of course C;) and although usually I'm not a big biography-watcher this one really appealed to me. It felt very human and unforced. And since I didn't know about Johnny Cash'es life before it gained even more of my interest.

This is so NOT inventive. Everyone's doing it. But it looks like fun so I wanted to create such a list too. :D
I won't add movies I've already seen before though. Just ones that are new to me. ;)
