General Category
These are the ones that don't fit into any of my arbitrary categories, they are what they are, horror movies.
A man tries to uncover an unconventional psychologist's therapy techniques on his institutionalized wife, amidst a series of brutal murders.
Early Cronenberg is a treat, his defining feature, later coined as "body horror", the mutation or mutilation of human bodies, is where the horror comes from just not knowing what the fuck you're looking at. This, mixed with the wholesome, backwoods, Cathy's Curse-esque Canadian-ness that could only be produced by low budgets and the 1970's makes for a very specific ambiance.
The Brood, unlike the rest of Cronenberg's catalogue is a mystery full of twists that keeps you wondering the entire time. All of your questions will be answered... but you won't like it.

A psychotic man, troubled by his childhood abuse, loose in NYC, kills young women and takes their scalps as trophies. Will he find the perfect woman in photographer Anna, and end his killing spree?
Grimy, sleazy, gruesome, these were all desired effects, but I just don't know if the filmmakers intended to make an art house film. Maniac is an emotional, contemplative piece that also features an exploding head.
Maniac is one of the prettiest and also most repulsive movies on this list, it's a subtle spectacle, a paradox.

A young man, who believes himself to be a vampire, goes to live with his elderly and hostile cousin in a small Pennsylvania town where he tries to redeem his blood-craving urges.
This film has an even lower budget than Night of the Living Dead somehow, but this is such a perfect example of how a low budget can't stop a great filmmaker, and in many cases I find limitations breed creativity. Martin could not be more packed with unique perversions.
I think it's no small statement to say that Martin is hands down my favorite George Romero film. It must be seen to be believed.

In 1630s New England, William and Katherine lead a devout Christian life with five children, homesteading on the edge of an impassable wilderness, exiled from their settlement when William defies the local church. When their newborn son vanishes and crops mysteriously fail, the family turns on one another.
This is really one of, if not the defining face of new horror that's come up in the latter half of this decade. I think this movie had a big part in the intent to unsettle and disturb, rather than purely scare.
The Witch is #mood-central. Eggers has an incredible sense of creating atmosphere, there's nothing else like it. This is like if doom metal was a movie.

A television reporter and cameraman follow emergency workers into a dark apartment building and are quickly locked inside with something terrifying.
In stark contrast to the new era of horror, we have the very best of the 2000's favorite sub-genre, the found-footage film. This movie will show you the value of the jump scare.
If you enjoy being scared, this is the one for you on this list.

Henry likes to kill people, in different ways each time. Henry shares an apartment with Otis. When Otis’ sister comes to stay, we see both sides of Henry: “the guy next door” and the serial killer.
I usually require, for me to really love a film, for there to be a lot of care put into the visual aspect. This movie is ugly. It feels like they just pointed the camera at the subjects haphazardly. It totally works.
Henry works based on the character itself, and of course Michael Rooker's performance. The thing that really shook me was the idea of someone you simply can't reason with. One of the most disturbing things I've seen.

In the immense city of Tokyo, the darkness of the afterlife lurks some of its inhabitants who are desperately trying to escape the sadness and isolation of the modern world.
The truest example of the word "chiller" this movie's mise en scène is coldness in every sense. Pulse is slow and quiet, depressing and hopeless.
This movie will haunt you with it's dark, crushing atmosphere, and in another sense you'll feel haunted yourself.
