Civic Movement MPs Found New Party

By Iceland Review

Three MPs and two deputy MPs of the Civic Movement, a political party created before the last elections in April, have decided to create a new political party called Hreyfingin, or the Movement, as they announced at a press conference on Friday.

Founding members of Hreyfingin (from left to right), MPs Birgitta Jónsdóttir, Margrét Tryggvadóttir and Thór Saari.

There is no one left in the Civic Movement’s parliamentary group since Thráinn Bertelsson resigned from the party in summer due to disputes with other party members and is now working as an independent MP, mbl.is reports.

An announcement from the Movement reads that the purpose of the new party is to follow the Civic Movement’s original platform and provide grassroots with a voice in Althingi, the Icelandic parliament.

Furthermore, the Movement “rejects the attempts of British and Dutch authorities to influence the preconditions Althingi introduced to the state guarantee on the Icesave obligations.”
