White House Spokesperson Argues Mike Pence Isn’t Anti-Gay In Worst Possible Way

"This may be the dumbest tweet out of an already incredibly pathetic comms office," one person responded on Twitter.

White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere was getting backlash Tuesday after he argued Vice President Mike Pence can’t be anti-LGBTQ because he is set to have lunch with Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, who is gay.

“For all of you who still think our @VP is anti-gay, I point you to his and the @SecondLady’s schedule tomorrow where they will join Taoiseach @LeoVaradkar and his partner Dr. Matthew Barrett for lunch in Ireland,” tweeted Deere, who is gay.

Varadkar is Ireland’s first openly gay leader.

Pence, a conservative Christian, has argued previously that same-sex marriage is a sign of “societal collapse” and, as governor of Indiana, signed legislation that could legalize discrimination against LGBTQ individuals.

He is in Ireland with second lady Karen Pence.

Twitter users mocked Deere over his argument:

Trump has eaten with Black people and is still racist; sohttps://t.co/6TYUStgSb5

Yeah, where would anyone get the idea that Mike Pence is anti-gay?

Other than his lifelong career of supporting discrimination against LGBT folks?

Ask him if he thinks gay people should have the same rights as everyone else Judd

Who is this tweet for? For anyone who reads and knows his actions and literally his words, this is clearly a lie about his beliefs.

For those who don’t care about his anti-LGBTQA, why would they care? https://t.co/hKXNhvyjA8

I point you, Judd, to everything he's basically every done. https://t.co/Ktd7N2gVQZ

Sure Jan. And Trump having Ben Carson in his administration makes him not racist. /snark#DeleteYourAccount

Wow, he agreed to meet a head of state? Bar’s pretty low and he still supports discrimination. Tell me he supports marriage equality, then we’ll talk.

That you apparently think this is a solid point is an insult to the intelligence of every sentient creature with more than two brain cells to rub together. Which, come to think of it, does eliminate the entire White House staff.

I can't believe you think this tweet bolsters your case. He was all for conversion therapy!?! C'mon!

If meeting with someone proves you share their ideals, what are we to make of Trump's repeated meetings with Putin and Kim Jong-un?

This may be the dumbest tweet out of an already incredibly pathetic comms office.

Does the VP believe two people of the same gender have the right to marry one another?

— Sam Stein (@samstein) September 3, 2019

If Pence has “a friend” then there’s no way he’s a horrible bigot

Calling all token gay peeps... who wants lunch with the @VP ? He'll do his best to smile your way, but don't try to sit next to him. https://t.co/SAoOR1W2LZ
