The 2022 Critics Choice Awards are January 9, which is 18 days before Oscar nominations voting begins. That roster will be revealed on February 8 and the 94th Academy Awards are on March 27. Over their 26-year history these prizes bestowed by the Critics Choice Association (CCA) have previewed 15 Best Picture Oscar winners as well as 21 Best Director, 17 Best Actor, 14 Best Actress, 16 Supporting Actor and 18 Supporting Actress champs.
The CCA is the largest critics organization in the United States and Canada, representing more than 400 television, radio and online critics and entertainment reporters. It was established in 2019 with the merger of the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association, recognizing the blurring of the distinctions between film, television, and streaming content.

In the Best Actress category, only Alana Haim is starring in a show which is also a Best Picture nominee and a Best Director nominee. The others none at all!!!!!
In the Best Actor category, Denzel Washington, Nicholas Cage and Peter Drinklage is in a show which has neither Best Director or Best Picture nominee. Only Benedict Cumberbatch is in a picture which is both a Best Picture and Best Director nominee but he is being nipped at the heels by Andrew Garfield and Will Smith who are in pictures with a Best Picture nominee only (no Best Director) which is not so great a disparity.
Two musicals are in the Best Picture category : tick, tick…….BOOM! and Cyrano.
Ncole Kidman manage to get in over Javier Bardem. So the overall critics still like Nicole’s performance (except for a few lone rangers).

These choices are indeed the likely best predictors this year for the 2022 Oscar nominations and eventual winners.
The Golden Globes of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association are this year far less relevant, owing to their diversity issue controversy and the fact that they will not be widely televised and instead supplanted by the broadcasting of these same Critics Choice Circle awards.
Also, the Globes of the HFPA do not consider the many technical categories represented by these Critics Choice selections.
I maintain that Steven Spielberg’s absolutely brilliant re-imagining of “West Side Story” is the most sublimely poised film to sweep the Oscars, just as did its predecessor sixty years ago.
No other film in contention has its pedigree.
The greatest filmmaker of the past fifty years has assembled a racially and culturally diverse group of young players to join with the living legend Rita Moreno and a dazzling group of technicians all at the top of their game to make this a fitting bookend, representing the greatest of movie musicals both in 1961 and 2021.
One imagines their collective Best Picture acceptance speech—bringing to the stage the great Spielberg and Moreno and all those generationally talented persons in between—to become an electrifying affirmation of great cinema, as itself a great legacy to withstand time.
While West Side Story may very well be awesome (and i expect it is), it’s still a remake. Other films of original content should weigh more heavily. Belfast was a very good film. King Richard was also a great film. Power of the Dog..just don’t get it, thought it was awful. Spencer was disturbing but KStew was Brilliant. I hear House of Gucci was just ok and CODA is supposed to be good. Lots to choose from. My choice remains Belfast…until I see the others.
What about Sarah Paulson as Linda Trip? What about Annaleigh Ashford as Paula Jones? How about Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton on Yellowstone?
