DISCOVERY

Gale is committed to the seamless integration of published content into library local systems, to promote the library's role in the learning and research supply chain. Working with various discovery partners for simple integration into library systems is an essential part of this. Our goal is to make Gale content discoverable to library end users regardless of where the student or patron begins their search. At Gale, we want to ensure users can discover and meaningfully connect with our resources to support their educational and research goals.  Our extensive portfolio (aggregated databases, databases, primary sources, and eBooks) makes us one of the major contributors of metadata in the academic information supply chain.

The following information outlines our current discovery metadata provision:

Library Discovery Services

Library discovery services are online tools that search across an institution’s collections (both print and online) and provide relevance-ranked results. Discovery tools are used in libraries around the world to facilitate end-users access to the wealth of content held by their libraries. Gale has partnered with the following discovery vendors for the benefit of our mutual customers:

  • ProQuest (Summon)
  • EBSCO Discovery Service
  • Ex Libris (Primo)
  • OCLC WorldCat Discovery
  • Sirsidynix
  • Piri Discovery Tool

This partnership ensures these discovery vendors can index our products, making them visible and discoverable for library users around the world. Gale indexing data is compliant with the Recommended Practices published by NISO's Open Discovery Initiative, and we are pleased to publish the following ODI Conformance Checklist, demonstrating our discoverability efforts.

Library Metadata

Gale delivers KBART-compliant metadata for our products to global library systems providers. KBART is the industry standard file format for knowledge bases by NISO recommended practice. Gale’s KBART lists are available publicly and are used by both customers and discovery service vendors. This integration with vendors’ knowledge bases is critical and the use of KBART supports this. The following system vendors use Gale KBART lists:

  • Clarivate:  ProQuest (360)
  • EBSCO: EDS Knowledge Base
  • Clarivate :  Alma and SFX
  • OCLC: WorldCat Knowledge Base
  • Sirsidynix

MARC Records from Gale

Our MARC-21 compliant records for Primary sources and Ebooks content include RDA elements and aim to drive discovery and usage of Gale resources within libraries. Gale records are released regularly following our content updates.

MARC records help to make the Gale subscribed content visible within the library's cataloging systems, ensuring that end users see all available bibliographic information when searching.
