Who WE Are – Ted Laws
Colonial Board of Education President Ted Laws bleeds cherry red and black, and it’s no wonder. He has served on the Board for 15 years, 11 in the capacity as president.
“It’s my return to the community. I’ve been involved in some type of volunteer organization since I was 16 years old,” he says. From serving as a volunteer firefighter with the Christiana Fire Department, coaching little league baseball, basketball and football, high school football and currently with the DIAA (Delaware Interscholastic Sports Association), Laws has been and remains entrenched in the community. Even though his five-year term on the school board is up next year, Laws says he may run again even though he was considering retiring. Laws’ decision will no doubt be driven by his love for Colonial Nation, and his deep devotion to his wife of 38 years, Donna, their two children JT (daughter in-law Samantha), and Nikki (future son in-law Emir), along with one grandson, Joseph T. Laws V. Both of his children graduated from William Penn at the top of their class, JT, now a doctor of Physical Therapy, and Nikki working at the University of Delaware where she is pursuing her Master’s degree in Urban Affairs and Public Policy. Laws wishes the same academic success for all Colonial students, which is why he remains committed to leading the school board. He acknowledges that he’d like to see more families attend the monthly meetings but says, “the community has the trust in the school board and the administration to make the right decisions for the community and our kids.” Laws would also like to see William Penn’s athletic stadium and fields upgraded to include lights and turf among other things before he steps away from his post because he believes it will put the Colonials on a level playing field with other student athletes in the area, providing them more opportunity to move on to the next level and to give the community more access to the facilities. He also feels strongly about the District’s Power of WE mantra saying, “the more people we have involved, the more strength the Power of We will have to make Colonial Nation better than ever!”
