Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan was born on August 5, 1960, in Murree, Pakistan. He has been a Justice of the Supreme Court of Pakistan since 28 June 2016.
Early life and education
Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan received his early education in Lahore. He got admission to Forman Christian College, Lahore in 1975 from where he graduated in 1979 with a scholarship
He joined the Punjab University Law College, Lahore where he completed his LLB and won a gold medal for academic excellence. After graduating, he started a law practice and completed his civil and criminal law apprenticeship.
He went to the United States for further studies and graduated with a Masters’s in Law (LL.M) from Cornell University, New York in 1987.
He was awarded the prestigious Chevening scholarship to study commercial law in the United Kingdom. He also received a fellowship from the South Western Institute for International Studies in Dallas, Texas.
Career
Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan joined law practice with a reputable law firm and later became a partner. He also taught contract and commercial law while practicing as an advocate.
He remained an associate as a partner in Cornelius, Lane & Mufti (CLM) which is considered the oldest law firm in Pakistan.
During his law practice, he conducted many cases before the high courts and Supreme Court of Pakistan. He also conducted commercial arbitrations involving local and multinational companies.
He attended local and international conferences and professional training courses organized by Asian Bar Association and the International Bar Association.
Lahore High Court
Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan was appointed as an additional judge on 15 September 2009. He was confirmed as a Judge of the Lahore High Court on 11 May 2011.
He represented the Lahore High Court in various conferences and study visits to the United States, China, and Japan. He was also an Inspection Judge for Kasur, Gujranwala, and Lahore.
During his tenure as a Judge of the Lahore High Court, Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan attended several conferences including National Judicial Conference (NJC) 2010-2011, in Islamabad, International Judicial Conference 2010, South Asia Conference on Environmental Justice and National Conference on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Lahore.

He was appointed as the Chief Justice of Lahore High Court on 6 November 2015 and served till 27 June 2016.
Supreme Court of Pakistan
Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan was elevated as Judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan on 28 June 2016.
Justice Ahsan was part of the five-member bench that delivered the verdict in the high-profile Panama gate case which led to the disqualification of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
He was also part of the three-member bench hearing petitions against the Elections Act 2017. The bench had ruled that an individual disqualified under Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution cannot serve as head of a political party.
According to the seniority list, Justice Ahsan will become the 30th Chief Justice of Pakistan on 27 October 2024. He will retire on 4 August 2025.
