Former Premier League footballer Delroy Facey has been charged with conspiracy to commit bribery.

Mr Facey, 34, of Huddersfield, made 10 top flight appearances for Bolton Wanderers between 2002 and 2004.

The striker was arrested last November as part of an ongoing National Crime Agency investigation into match fixing.

As part of that operation, three men - Chann Sankaran, Krishna Ganeshan and Michael Boateng - were convicted in June.

They were found to have paid footballers in order to influence the outcome of matches so that others gambling on the action could profit.

Public interest

Before joining Bolton, Mr Facey began his career at Huddersfield Town and had spells at West Bromwich Albion, Tranmere Rovers and Bradford City.

In a statement, the NCA said the Crown Prosecution Service believed prosecuting the player was in the public interest and there was "realistic prospect of conviction".

He is due to appear before Cannock Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

Another man arrested as part of the NCA's investigation, Moses Swaibu, faces a retrial after the jury was unable to reach a verdict in June.

Mr Swaibu is due at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday 19 September.
