‘Decolonization’ Is Not About Equality https://www.amren.com/blog/2024/11/decolonization-is-not-about-equality/ Fri, 22 Nov 2024 23:54:54 +0000 https://www.amren.com/?p=180803 Māori call you a Kluxer if you deny them special rights.

A protest by Māori members in the New Zealand Parliament recently went viral on X and TikTok.

A similar protest took place in Wellington.

While some may argue this is about resistance to colonization, it is in opposition to equal rights. Despite these protests, a new bill that would eliminate some of the special communal rights that Māori enjoy under the Treaty of Waitangi has begun progress through the legislature.

A minor partner in the ruling coalition, the Act Party, introduced the law. As party leader David Seymour explained, the status quo gave Māori “different rights from other New Zealanders.” Mr. Seymour has also attacked the Solicitor-General for telling prosecutors to “think carefully” if a Māori person was to be charged for a crime, implying that Māoris deserve more lenient treatment. The Māori party “Te Pāti Māori” compared the Act Party to the KKK, and a member of the Labour Party called David Seymour a “liar.” The Labour member was forced to leave the chamber for breaking its rules.

The bill is unlikely to pass. The other parties in the governing coalition are lukewarm towards it, and it may not even get a formal reading.

Māori anger comes despite years of groveling to them. The government had commissioned a report to find out why Māori are arrested more often and, naturally, concluded it was due to “systemic racism.” Former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern officially made a “long overdue” apology to the Māori. The government recognized Māori New Year as an official holiday in 2022. A statue of Captain Cook was removed after protests from local Māori. The Parliament even abandoned its rule requiring men to wear neckties because the leader of the Māori party said it was a “colonial noose.”

Not surprisingly, none of this led to reconciliation. Instead, Māori are demanding major changes, including abolition of prisons and changing the name of the country to Aotearoa. The haka dance, often defended as a ritual of welcome or celebration, is exactly what the original British explorers though it was: a war dance. To do it on the floor of Parliament is an outrage.

“Warrior culture” posturing and threatening gestures mix uneasily with complaints about exploitation or colonization. The Māori want it both ways: victim status and deference to a warrior culture.

Decolonization” in the West is almost always this unnatural combination. From Chicano activists in the Southwest celebrating the savage Aztec heritage, to blacks putting up monuments to Nat Turner, to the behavior of many Muslims in Europe, non-whites always seem to be at whites’ throats or at our feet — sometimes simultaneously.

If the Māori find equal rights appalling, it is time to ditch the pretense of coexistence. Still, this spectacle confirms that almost everyone is a blood-and-soil nationalist — at least for the groups he likes. A solution would be to give the Māori territory and let them indulge in whatever silly rituals they want — on their own. There should be no aid, no special rights in New Zealand, and no citizenship in a Western country. Separation is the only solution for non-whites who claim that equal treatment is exploitation. And if the Aotearoans want to bring back the traditional practice of cannibalism, that will be their business. They should be entirely on their own.

Arizona’s Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs says the border state, which voted for President-elect Trump in the presidential election this month, will not be aiding the incoming administration with its “misguided” plan to launch a mass deportation operation.

Hobbs was asked by ABC News about whether the Trump administration will bring a reset on the border, and she responded by focusing on current partnerships with the federal government to secure the border.

She then added, “What I will unequivocally say is that, as governor, I will not tolerate efforts that are part of misguided policies that harm our communities, that threaten our communities, that terrorize our communities, and Arizona will not take part in those.”

Trump made launching a mass deportation operation a key part of his 2024 presidential campaign, and his transition team has already started making plans on the logistics of the operation. On Monday, Trump said he was open to declaring a national emergency and using military assets to make it happen.

When pressed on the deportations, Hobbs’ was asked if state police and National Guard would help with deportations.

“We will not be participating in misguided efforts that harm our communities, and I’ve been incredibly clear about that,” she said.

Undocumented Migrants Hope Trump Mass Deportations Only ‘For Criminals’ https://www.amren.com/news/2024/11/undocumented-migrants-hope-trump-mass-deportations-only-for-criminals/ Fri, 22 Nov 2024 23:52:38 +0000 https://www.amren.com/?p=180795 "I'm not scared at all, actually."

Gabriela entered the United States more than two decades ago, gasping for breath under a pile of corn stalks in the boot of a smuggler’s car.

Now a housekeeper in Maryland, the Bolivian national is one of at least 13 million undocumented migrants living in the US – an umbrella term that includes those who entered the US illegally, overstayed their visas or have protected status to avoid deportation.

Across the US, migrants like Gabriela are grappling with what the incoming Trump administration’s vow to conduct mass deportations could mean for their future.

In over a dozen interviews, undocumented immigrants said it was a topic of heated discussion in their communities, WhatsApp groups and social media.

Some, like Gabriela, believe it won’t impact them at all.

“I’m not scared at all, actually,” she said. “That’s for criminals to worry about. I pay taxes, and I work.”

“In any case, I’m undocumented,” she added. “[So] how would they even know about me?”

In an election campaign where immigration loomed large as a major concern of US voters, Trump frequently pledged to deport migrants en masse from US soil from his first day in office if he were to return to the presidency.

But nearly two weeks after his sweeping election win, it remains unclear what exactly these immigration enforcement operations will look like.

The president-elect has insisted cost won’t be an issue, and has confirmed he plans to declare a national emergency to secure the necessary resources. But experts have cautioned that his promises may run into enormous financial and logistics challenges.

His newly appointed “border tsar”, Tom Homan, has said that undocumented migrants deemed to be national security or public safety threats will be a priority. And he has suggested workplace raids – a practice ended by the Biden administration – could return.

Speaking to Fox News on Saturday, the former acting director of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement during Trump’s first term challenged the notion that “those who enforce the law are the bad guys and those who break the law are the victims”.

“What member of Congress, what governor or what mayor is against taking public safety threats out of their community?” he asked, adding that the new administration would “follow through on the mandate that American people gave President Trump”.

US authorities deporting migrants is nothing new. More than 1.5 million people have been expelled under President Joe Biden, in addition to millions swiftly turned away from the border during the Covid-19 pandemic.

During the eight-year administration of Barack Obama – whom some dubbed the “deporter-in-chief” – about three million people were deported, with a focus on single men from Mexico that could easily be deported from border regions.

Trump’s promised plans, however, are more wide-ranging and aggressive, including enforcement operations in the US far from the border. Officials are reportedly also mulling using the National Guard and military aircraft to detain and ultimately deport people.

JD Vance, Trump’s running mate and incoming vice-president, has said that the deportations could “start” with one million people.

Still, some undocumented migrants believe that they will benefit from a Trump presidency instead of being kicked out.

“A lot of Latinos, those who can vote, did so because they think he [Trump] can improve the economy. That would be very good for us too,” said Carlos, an undocumented Mexican who lives in New York City. His son is a US citizen.

According to the American Immigration Council – a non-partisan organisation that conducts research and advocates for an overhaul of the US immigration system – there are more than five million Americans who were born to undocumented parents and have the security of US citizenship.

Carlos says he is “a little” worried about getting swept up in immigration raids. But that fear is tempered by the possibility of an improved economy under Trump and more work.

“Things may be a bit tense right in our communities right now, but being worried isn’t a solution,” he said. “The best thing to do is avoid problems and not commit any crimes.”

There are many others who don’t share in this optimism, and are living in fear.

Among them is California resident Eric Bautista, a so-called “Dreamer”, who benefits from a longstanding programme that protects from deportation those who were brought illegally into the US as children.

At 29, Mr Bautista has only fleeting memories of life in Mexico, the country in which he was born and left at the age of seven.

For the last four years, he has taught US history to high schoolers – including details of how waves of immigrants from Italy, Ireland, China, Japan and Mexico settled in the country, and often faced xenophobia.

“I don’t think I’ve ever felt this way, even after more than 20 years here,” Mr Bautista told the BBC. “It feels like we’re at a turning point, a new wave of nativism like those I teach about.

“It’s just a future of fear and uncertainty for us.”

Advocates and legal experts said there was no guarantee that undocumented migrants without criminal convictions would not be ensnared in ramped-up deportation efforts.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, policy director at the American Immigration Council, said that he foresaw an uptick in “collateral arrests” – a term used in the first Trump administration to describe immigrants swept up during enforcement actions even though they may not have been the original targets.

“Let’s say they go after somebody with a criminal record, and that person lives in a house with four other [undocumented] people,” he said. “We saw with the first Trump administration, they’ll arrest those people as well.”

In a recent interview with CBS, the BBC’s US partner, Homan was asked about a hypothetical situation in which a grandmother was caught up in a “targeted” enforcement operation going after criminals.

When asked if she would be deported, Homan responded “it depends”.

“Let the judge decide,” he said. “We’re gonna remove people that a judge has ordered deported.”

The arrest and potential removal of such collateral arrests would mark a drastic departure from the Biden administration, which has focused on public safety threats and deporting people soon after their apprehension at the border.

While Homan recently dismissed suggestions that there could be “a mass sweep of neighbourhoods” or large detention camps set up, the stock prices of companies that could be involved in building detention facilities have jumped by as much as 90% since the election. They include publicly traded prison firms GEO Group and CoreCivic.

Undocumented migrants are employed throughout the US economy – from agricultural fields to warehouses and construction sites.

Mr Reichlin-Melnick said operations targeting such workplaces could lead to “indiscriminate” detentions.

“I don’t think that being a person with no criminal record [who] pays taxes protects anybody,” he said. “One of the first things that Trump will do is get rid of the Biden administration’s enforcement priorities. And we’ve seen that when there are no priorities, they will go after whoever are the easiest targets.”

The possibility of becoming “an easy target” has worried many migrants – particularly those from families with mixed legal statuses. Their biggest fear is finding themselves separated.

Brenda, a 37-year-old Mexico-born “Dreamer” in Texas, is currently protected from deportation but her husband and her mother are not.

Her two children were born in the US and are American citizens.

While Brenda told the BBC she does not believe that “good people” would be the first targets for deportation, she can’t escape the thought that her husband could be sent back to Mexico.

“It’s important for us that we see our sons grow up,” she said. “Of course, the thought of being separated leaves one frightened.”

Governor Kevin Stitt appointed Oklahoma Public Safety Commissioner Tim Tipton to head “Operation Guardian” on Friday, Nov. 15.

The focus of the operation is to get rid of those who are incarcerated in Oklahoma facilities, whom are illegally in the country.

“The Oklahoma taxpayer should not be left holding the bill for President Biden’s open border policies,” Gov. Stitt said in a press release sent to 7News. “As law and order returns to the White House, Oklahoma will lead the charge with a comprehensive plan to deport those who have committed crimes in Oklahoma while in the country illegally.”

{snip}

At the moment, there are over 500 illegal immigrants housed in ODOC facilities “for criminal activity unrelated to their unlawful presence in the U.S.,” according to government officials.

This costs the Oklahoma taxpayers around $36,000 a day, according to the release.

The Judges Who Overturned Jussie Smollett’s Conviction – And Their History of Controversial Rulings https://www.amren.com/news/2024/11/the-judges-who-overturned-jussie-smolletts-conviction-and-their-history-of-controversial-rulings/ Fri, 22 Nov 2024 23:52:32 +0000 https://www.amren.com/?p=180808 The court is notoriously soft on crime.

The post The Judges Who Overturned Jussie Smollett’s Conviction – And Their History of Controversial Rulings appeared first on American Renaissance.

]]>
The Illinois Supreme Court that overturned Jussie Smollett’s conviction today made the ‘disappointing’ ruling off the back of a wave of controversial decisions.

In just the past two years, the seven-member court has eliminated cash bail for criminals in Illinois and upheld a ban on assault weapons in the state, soft-on-crime rulings that angered conservatives.

In the former, the justices ruled that monetary bail is not ‘the only means to ensure criminal defendants appear for trials or the only means to protect the public’, in a move seen in several other Democrat-led states that has drawn scrutiny.

The weapons ban from August 2023 came as the state Supreme Court decided that despite the 2nd Amendment of the Constitution, a ban on assault weapons would not be unconstitutional.

Although the ban received support from top Democrats including Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, a federal judge stepped in this week and overturned it – as they slammed the court for impacting ‘tens of millions of law-abiding United States citizens.’

Criticism of the Illinois Supreme Court has now reached fever pitch in the wake of its ruling overturning Smollett’s conviction for lying to the police over a bizarre anti-Trump hoax.

The special prosecutor in Smollett’s case, U.S. Attorney Dan Webb, told DailyMail.com in a statement that the ruling completely ignored the evidence he presented, and he was ‘disappointed’ as it ‘had nothing to do with Mr. Smollett’s innocence.’

But Webb argued that the state Supreme Court misinterpreted the law, and said their ruling had ‘upended long-standing Illinois precedent.’

He noted that the court ‘did not find any error with the overwhelming evidence presented at trial’, and that Smollett ‘did not even challenge the sufficiency of the evidence against him in his appeal.’

In particular, he claimed that when Smollett’s case was first dismissed, it was ‘via a nolle prosequi, which does not bar re-prosecution under Illinois law.’

Webb’s statement cast doubt on the court’s approach to its rulings, which came at the end of Smollett’s long and twisting legal saga that began over five years ago.

Smollett was convicted in December 2021 for lying to police about an alleged episode in Chicago two years before, where he claimed two men beat him, yelled homophobic slurs and placed a noose around his neck while wearing MAGA hats.

He was sentenced to 150 days in jail and 30 months’ probation after it was proven that he made the episode up, and he was also slapped with a hefty fine of $130,160.

Smollett appealed the ruling and has not yet served a day of that sentence behind bars, even after his conviction was previously affirmed by a lower court in 2023 before the Supreme Court agreed to hear his appeal.

When the Illinois Supreme Court handed down the ruling to overturn that conviction on Thursday, Chief Justice Theis and Justice Cunningham recused themselves from the decision. The brief did not explain why.

The court’s opinion pointed to the agreement Smollett had with Illinois prosecutors after his charges were dropped.

‘We are aware that this case has generated significant public interest and that many people were dissatisfied with the resolution of the original case and believed it to be unjust,’ the opinion read.

‘Nevertheless, what would be more unjust than the resolution of any one criminal case would be a holding from this court that the State was not bound to honor agreements upon which people have detrimentally relied.’

The actor’s hoax and subsequent arrest sparked a media firestorm years ago, as it was found that he had actually paid two Nigerian brothers – Abel and Ola Osundairo – to stage the incident.

When Smollett first came forward with his story, the actor was met with widespread support, and the Chicago PD vowed to swiftly find his attackers. Smollett even showed police the noose that he claimed he was almost lynched with.

]]>
Real Housewives of Beverly Hills’ newest star Bozoma Saint John has divided opinion after revealing the lengths she went to in order to increase diversity in the workplace during her corporate career.

The businesswoman, 47, previously held high-ranking positions at companies like Uber, Netflix, PepsiCo, and Apple Music before venturing into reality TV.

Discussing her hiring practices at the 2019 Women in the World Summit, the former Netflix CMO said that she intentionally sought out other women of color for roles – even if they hadn’t applied for the position she was hiring for.

‘I walk into the room and very rarely does it look like, you know, anyone who reflects my community or my friends or my circle,’ she told the crowd.

‘I decided, hell, focus group of one, team of one, I’m gonna just hire myself. Again and again and again and again and again.

‘If I want to increase the numbers of diversity, or especially Black women in tech, I’m gonna do it myself,’ she continued.

‘So, as I looked at the resumes that were NOT diverse candidates, I just started pulling from my group of friends,’ she laughed.

‘I started pitching them. Like, “Girl, whatchu doin’ today? You like your job? You don’t like your job, c’mon!”

‘The first Black woman I hired it was like, “Okay, great. Fantastic. We didn’t even know she existed.” I was like, “I know, I got her.” And then the second one it was like, “Okay…” The third one, it was like everybody kind of paused.’

Bozoma said that she then received a call from the HR department after hiring the fourth consecutive woman of color.

She was asked if there was ‘anything wrong’ with the candidates that HR had been sending her way because it seemed like she was ‘hiring a certain type of person.’

‘And I was like, “Yes, you are correct.” And then they were like, “Well, is there any way that we can help to make sure that we’re looking at a broad range of candidates so that you have a wider pool of people to hire.”

‘And I was like, “Did you tell homeboy down the hall that? Did you tell him that he shouldn’t hire anymore white men? Because I don’t think so!”‘ she finished.

Bozoma’s resurfaced comments divided opinion after All About The Tea reposted the clip to their Instagram account, but most people seemed supportive of the star.

‘This! It’s okay when they do, but it’s a problem when we do it!’ gushed one fan.

‘She is BRILLIANT,’ wrote another. ‘Instead of huffing and puffing and reacting off emotions, she was strategic, professional and INTENTIONAL with how she made that change.’

A third added, ‘This makes me like her even more. She can’t do any wrong.’

However, not everybody was a fan of Bozoma’s tactics, with one commenting, ‘DEI is never the correct way to hire someone. No matter what race you are. The most qualified candidate should get the job.’

Another wrote, ‘So she actively discriminates qualified people to artificially increase the number of Black employees. That is pure racism. Outrageous and against the law!’

Bozoma is one of the most successful women in the marketing field.

Her work has previously been recognized by Forbes, Billboard, Fortune, and Ad Week, and she was inducted into the American Marketing Association Marketing Hall of Fame in 2022.

She joined the cast of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills this year alongside actress Jennifer Tilly.

She was introduced as a friend of Sutton Stracke’s on the series, but has since formed a close bond with Dorit Kemsley.

Outgoing Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) — a member of the far-left “Squad” — is demanding that the next Star Wars movie features a black Jedi lead character, saying he will refuse to watch and will even denounce the movie franchise if his demand isn’t met.

The threat to the Walt Disney Company comes as the studio recently announced a new Star Wars movie trilogy in the making from X-Men veteran Simon Kinberg.

Rep. Jamaal Bowman, who is set to leave Congress in January after losing his primary, made his demand known in an X post on Tuesday.

“If the lead Jedi is not a Black [sic] man I ain’t messing with yall. Yall not about to make 12 Star Wars and have all white leads for all 12. Y’all wilding with that and I hate to say that I would not watch and will spend the rest of my days denouncing this franchise that I have loved,” he wrote.

Bowman dismissed online comments bringing up the Mace Windu character (Samuel L. Jackson) from the prequel movies.  “Nah man. Lead. Protagonist. Story build around them. That’s it,” he wrote.

Bowman’s demand has prompted much social media ridicule.

A Yemeni migrant has confessed to raping a 14-year-old girl after isolating her at a bus stop and demanding sex through a translation app. The 35-year-old man, who does not speak German, is on trial in Munich for the crime.

Abdulanaser A. approached the girl at a bus stop in January in the Dachau district and demanded sex through a translation app. The girl tried to flee, but the Yemeni man followed her and forced the young woman into a nearby wooden hut. He then raped her and also managed to obtain her phone number from the woman’s phone.

The girl was so scared during the incident, that she lost consciousness, according to the prosecutor.

Remarkably, the man was only caught because he decided to text the girl after the incident. He sent pornography to the woman and demanded nude photos, according to Süddeutsche Zeitung.

The police were then able to trace his number and arrest him.

During the trial, the man confessed to the crime, but he did not give any further explanation for the rape. He had his lawyer apologize to the girl. The man has been in custody since his arrest, with a verdict expected next month. The charge of rape carries a sentence between six months and up to five years in prison.

Germany’s Lutheran Church will now exclude members of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party from any leadership positions due to the party’s politics.

The Evangelical Church of Central Germany, which serves most of the provinces of Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, and smaller parts of the provinces of Brandenburg and Saxony, will no longer allow AfD members to serve in any church leadership positions, including on parish councils.

“Anti-human, xenophobic and anti-Church positions are incompatible with holding office either in a parish council or in other leadership positions of our church,”  county bishop Friedrich Kramer announced at the beginning of the church’s autumn synod, adding that membership in “extremist parties” is against the church constitution.

The local constitutional protection office in both Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia have declared the AfD a far-right organization, reports Die Welt.

At the same time, Bishop Kramer claims that “the church doors are still open to all people.”

At the start of the year, the same church initiated proceedings against one of its pastors, Martin Michaels, serving in Quedlinburg in the Harz Mountains, who won a mandate in the city council as a non-party member, but with the support of the AfD. He has since been removed as a pastor. And over the summer, the Magdeburg Catholic bishopric made it clear that AfD members cannot work in church bodies.

In the midst of all this, Germany has also inched closer to instituting an all-out ban on the party itself.

Australia’s delegation to the COP29 climate change conference has been labelled a “complete farce” after one speaker opened her remarks with an Indigenous Acknowledgment of Country — for an event in Azerbaijan.

The two-week 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference, which wraps up on Friday, was held in the tiny former Soviet republic straddling eastern Europe and western Asia.

Despite the fact that the capital Baku is more than 13,000 kilometres from Sydney, that did not stop Dr Clare Anderson from paying respects to Australia’s traditional owners, as is now customary before most corporate, government and sporting events.

Dr Anderson, director of sustainability performance at engineering and professional services firm Worley, was speaking before a nearly empty crowd for the opening panel session at the Australian pavilion in Baku.

“I’m very delighted to be here today,” she said.

“To start, I might … whilst we’re not on Australian lands, I’d still like to start with acknowledging the traditional owners of Australia and the Torres Strait Islands and pay my respects to their elders, past, present and emerging.”

A clip of the moment was shared on X by former Australian MP Craig Kelly.

“What a complete farce — here’s a video from the ‘Australian Pavilion’ at the climate wankfest at Baku — funded by Australian taxpayers,” he wrote.

“Imagine, all that coin to pay for constructing an exhibition stand, flying a delegation half way around world, setting up video facilities to record it all — and they get five people to attend.”

He added that “I wonder if this would pass muster if we had an Australian DOGE”, referring to US President-elect Donald Trump’s Elon Musk-headed Department of Government Efficiency.

The video sparked bemusement among many viewers.

“Why are Australian government officials doing a welcome to country in Azerbaijan,” Nationals Senator Matt Canavan asked.

“Welcome to Country … in Baku,” said Freelancer chief executive Matt Barrie.

One-time Liberal candidate Katherine Deves, who unsuccessfully ran for former Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s northern beaches seat of Warringah in 2022, said, “Australia is an outpost. No one cares.”

Several X users labelled it a “joke”.

“Cancel the return flight, the credit cards and disavow. That will save lots of planet and our money,” one wrote.

“We are not a serious country,” another said.

After the failure of the Voice to Parliament referendum last year, some commentators have suggested the Welcome to Country and Acknowledgment of Country — now found everywhere from bus announcements and school assemblies to job interviews and pilates classes — should be scaled back.

Shadow Indigenous Australians Minister Jacinta Nampijinpa Price said earlier this year the overuse of the Welcome to Country in Australian public life could actually make people feel unwelcome in their own country.

Ms Price told Sky News Australians should not be “confronted with it at every single opportunity”.

In September, One Nation Senator Pauline Hanson called for ceremonies to be banned, saying Australians were “sick and tired of them”.

“They are sick of being told Australia is not their country, which is what these things effectively do,” she wrote on X.

During the more than 350 years during which slavery was legal in Brazil, harsh conditions prompted a string of uprisings, often resulting in the establishment of quilombos – independent communities formed by escaped Africans who were formerly enslaved, and their descendants.

None were more prominent than the one known as Palmares, where, in the 17th century, as many as 11,000 people lived in a string of communities across parts of the north-eastern states of Alagoas and Pernambuco.

But the roughly 100-year history of what historians regard as the most significant resistance movement against slavery in Brazil began to unravel on 20 November 1695, when its most famous leader, Zumbi, was captured by Portuguese colonial forces and killed.

Three hundred and twenty-nine years later, the date will for the first time be marked as a national public holiday: Black Consciousness Day, which has been a longstanding demand of Black movements that still face attacks from the far right.

A series of events – including at least 38 in São Paulo alone – will mark the date nationwide, celebrating Zumbi, Palmares and the ongoing fight for racial equality.

“Palmares was the largest quilombo in the Americas, both in terms of its longevity and population,” said Danilo Luiz Marques, a historian and professor at the Federal University of Alagoas.

Some researchers have described Palmares – whose first records date back to 1590 – as the earliest form of a republic to emerge on Brazilian soil. Marques, however, argues that it was a Bantu kingdom, reflecting the central-African language family to which most Africans brought to Brazil belonged.

Black movements in Brazil have celebrated the names of Zumbi and Palmares since the early 20th century at the earliest, but it was only in 1971 that 20 November became a key date.

Activists had sought a date to contrast with another historically associated with Black people: 13 May, the day slavery was abolished in 1888.

Rather than celebrating Black individuals, however, 13 May had traditionally been used to exalt the white princess who signed the abolition decree: Isabel, then the regent of the Brazilian empire.

“The princess was glorified as if she had granted a favour to the enslaved people; as if she were a heroine,” said Deivison Campos, a historian and professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul.

“The Palmares group sought to counter this narrative, proposing 20 November as a way to honour the collective struggle for the inclusion of Black people in Brazilian society,” he said.

Today, 13 May is still celebrated, with Black activists arguing it cannot be ignored since abolition was primarily the result of Black resistance. However, 20 November has become so popular that November is now informally known as Brazil’s Black Consciousness Month.

The law to make Black Consciousness Day Brazil’s 10th national holiday – signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in December 2023 – was passed amid significant resistance from conservatives.

During the presidency of far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro, Sérgio Camargo, the then head of the Palmares Foundation – a federal body established in 1988 to promote African-Brazilian culture – harshly criticised the 20 November holiday, labelling it the Day of Black Victimisation, the Day of the Black Mind Enslaved by the Left or the Day of Resentment for the Past.

Some within the far-right even doubt the existence of Palmares or its most famous leader despite extensive historical evidence. “Falsehoods have always been used to attack Black history,” said Marques.

Brazil’s largest television network, Rede Globo, will mark the date with a 50-minute primetime special focusing on the wrongful imprisonment of Black individuals based on photographic identification – a widespread issue in the country.

“In Brazil, Black people continue to be imprisoned, deprived of freedom, a healthy life and the chance to realise their dreams simply because they are Black,” said the special’s creator and presenter, Clayton Nascimento.

“It’s important that 20 November is, for the first time, a public holiday because it allows us to pause and reflect on Brazil’s Black history. We were the ones who built this nation,” he added.

]]>
Jussie Smollett has had his conviction for lying to the police with a bizarre anti-Trump hoax overturned in a sensational ruling from the Illinois Supreme Court.

The court found that the former ‘Empire’ actor had his rights violated by a special prosecutor’s decision to retry him after initial charges against him were dropped with an agreement that he would not be re-charged.

Although Smollett claimed he was attacked by two white Trump supporters, detectives reviewed surveillance footage and zeroed in on the Osundairo brothers as suspects.

When presented with a grainy surveillance picture of the brothers near the scene, Smollett said they were ‘absolutely’ the men who attacked him, not realizing they had already been arrested.

One of his attorneys, Tina Glandian, claimed that Smollett may have misidentified the brothers – who he had also just been on the phone with moments before – because they could have been ‘in disguise’ in white makeup.

She went on to point to a 2016 YouTube video of Abel Osundairo, the brother in question, where he is wearing white make-up to perform a Joker monologue for Halloween as proof of her theory.

By that time, stories had leaked that detectives believed Smollett had concocted the story, seemingly in an attempt boost his public profile.

Smollett went on Good Morning America to tearfully insist he was the victim, but by February 2019, a month after the incident, he was arrested and charged with filing a false police report, and his character from Empire was halted.

Jussie Smollett’s lawyer Tina Glandian suggested that the reason he told police his Nigerian attackers were white was because they ‘might have been wearing white face.’ Her evidence of the theory was 2016 video of Abel Osundairo (pictured) dressed up as the Joker for Halloween

However, despite a grand jury indicting him for repeatedly lying to cops, the charges against Smollett were then sensationally dropped a month later in March, sparking outrage from the public.

President Trump led the backlash as he decried the charges being dropped as an ’embarrassment to the nation’, while Chicago Police Chief Eddie Johnson, who is Black, said at the time: ‘Jussie Smollett took advantage of the pain and anger of racism to promote his career.’

The Mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, amounted it to a ‘whitewash of justice’ that proved Smollett was treated gently by the system because he is a celebrity and a prominent figure in the city.

After he was fined $140,000 for wasting police resources, a special prosecutor was named to investigate why the charges against Smollett were dropped.

It was this decision that has now led to Smollett’s ultimate conviction to be overturned this week, as it was found his rights were violated because Smollett had agreed with prosecutors that he would not be re-charged at the time after the case against him was dropped.

In February 2020 Smollett was indicted again on felony lying to police, and following a contentious trial where he maintained his innocence, Smollett was convicted at the conclusion of his trial in 2021.

Smollett again sparked backlash during his conviction hearing, as he triumphantly raised his fist to appear defiant, despite being caught in a lie.

When the Illinois Supreme Court handed down the ruling to overturn that conviction on Thursday, Chief Justice Theis and Justice Cunningham recused themselves from the decision.

Cheri Hall woke up hours before dawn the morning after Election Day and checked her phone anxiously for results. A news notification hinting that former President Donald J. Trump had defeated Vice President Kamala Harris caused her to gasp and grab her chest.

{snip}

Black women voters supported Ms. Harris in overwhelming numbers — upward of 90 percent cast ballots for her, according to some exit polls. And her loss, as the first Black woman presidential nominee, left supporters such as Ms. Hall feeling disillusioned. On social media, under hashtags like #blackwomenrest and #restera, some women have emphasized that after turning out strong for Ms. Harris, they feel unappreciated and defeated, and are ready to bow out of the political and culture wars, for now, to focus on their personal well-being.

{snip}

The weekend after Mr. Trump’s victory, Ms. Hall told her 4,000-plus TikTok followers that she would be taking what she calls “the great Black step back.” She won’t allow herself to feel consumed by national politics, she said, and she instead plans to focus on her mental and physical health by exercising and no longer molding herself to please others.

{snip}

“I think of this as our opportunity to decenter everyone and focus on us,” Ms. Hall said in the video, in which she wears a T-shirt emblazoned with the phrase “minding my black-owned business.”

So what does a “rest era” look like? In interviews and online, some Black women said it could mean striving for more sleep, declining extra responsibilities at work or exploring new hobbies. Others said it might mean volunteering in local Black communities, eating more healthfully, spending time with loved ones or simply allowing themselves to grieve the election’s outcome or distance themselves from national politics.

{snip} Black women have been at the vanguard of political and social movements like #MeToo and Black Lives Matter, as well as mobilizations to elect Hillary Clinton in 2016 and President Biden in 2020.

{snip}

Focusing on personal wellness might feel in conflict with the cultural archetype of the strong Black woman — one who cares for others often at the expense of her own physical and emotional needs, said Amani Nuru-Jeter, a professor of community health sciences and epidemiology at the University of California, Berkeley.

{snip}

After Mr. Trump was elected, Oinetta Kambui, 52, a recruiter and TikTok creator in Jacksonville, Fla., hopped on a phone call with her sisters. They all agreed: Many Black women “just want to be literally left alone to tend to our own communities,” she said.

Although Mrs. Kambui has joined civil rights protests in the past, she doesn’t plan to participate in any in the near future, she said, unless they involve her own community.

The founder of an artificial intelligence company used in schools across the US has been accused of spending investors money on herself as her company spiraled into bankruptcy.

Joanna Smith-Griffin, 33, of Raleigh, North Carolina, was arrested in her home state and charged with securities fraud, wire fraud and identity theft on Tuesday, a indictment unsealed in Manhattan federal court revealed.

The Forbes 30 Under 30 mention founded ALLHere Education Inc., an artificial intelligence company that supplied school districts across the country with a ‘learning acceleration web-based platform’ designed to ‘boost student success’ and ‘revolutionize how K-12 education is tailored to meet individual needs.’

Created in 2016, the company also manufactured Ed the chatbot – a product used by the Los Angeles Unified School District for a time before eventually shutting it down – citing the financial collapse of the company.

Smith-Griffin claimed the company’s products were used in other major school districts including in New York City and Atlanta.

But the indictment, unsealed in Manhattan federal court on Tuesday, accused Smith-Griffin of misrepresenting AllHere’s finances to investors enabling her to illegally collect millions of dollars from them since 2020.

Smith-Griffin allegedly told potential investors that AllHere had generated approximately $3.7 million in revenue in 2020, had approximately $2.5 million in cash on hand and had major school district customers like the New York City Department of Education and Atlanta Public Schools, the New York U.S. Attorney’s Office revealed.

However, authorities later found that the tech tycoon had only generated a meager $11,000 in revenue in 2020, had just $494,000 in cash and did not have contracts with many of the customers it represented.

Smith-Griffin’s alleged falsifications continued through the company’s collapse, as she was was able to obtain nearly $10 million from investors and sought an additional $35 million from a private equity investor who ultimately decided not to invest.

The 33-year-old has also been accused of embezzling corporate funds for her own benefit as she allegedly used some of the fraudulently-obtained funds to put a down payment on her house and pay for her wedding.

The wedding, a three-day extravagant affair set in Florida, would feature a welcome party dinner, a black-tie ceremony held at member’s only hotel and a post-wedding barbeque.

Smith-Griffin has also been accused of generating a fake email account in an attempt to cover up her crimes.

When investors and outside accountants accidentally uncovered discrepancies between the company’s actual finances and what Smith-Griffin claimed, the mother-of-two used the fake email to pose as AllHere’s outside financial consultant, as she shared fraudulent financial documents with her largest investor.

AllHere filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation in June and has since laid off all employees is now under the control of a court-appointed bankruptcy trustee.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said that Smith-Griffin ‘orchestrated a deliberate and calculated scheme to deceive investors in AllHere Education, Inc., inflating the company´s financials to secure millions of dollars under false pretenses.’

It was not immediately clear who would represent her in an afternoon court appearance in North Carolina.

James E. Dennehy, head of New York’s FBI office, said she misrepresented the composition of her startup company and ‘masqueraded as a financial consultant to perpetuate the scheme once discrepancies were discovered.’

He also said her ‘selfishly prioritizing personal expenses’ over the company’s needs damaged the potential for improved learning environments across major school districts,’ according to the release.

Smith-Griffin’s charges of wire and securities fraud each carry maximum sentences of 20 years in prison, while her aggravated identity theft charge, carries a mandatory sentence of two years in prison.

There are around 1.4 million illegal immigrants in the United States who have been ordered deported by federal immigration judges, Fox News has learned.

Of those ordered to be brought back to their home countries, around 13,000 of them are being held in custody by U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement (ICE), a U.S. official said.

With only a few thousand in custody, many more are in the U.S. illegally despite orders to have them removed. Figures on how many are being held in local or state custody were not available.

The 1.4 million figure means that those ordered removed have had their immigration cases heard and decided. Some may still have appeal options available to them, the official said.

The figure also goes back many years, across multiple presidential administrations, and changes, as some illegal immigrants are ordered deported and others are removed from the country.

Tren de Aragua gang member Jose Ibarra was sentenced to life without parole Wednesday for the vicious murder of promising nursing student Laken Riley in a case that ignited a national firestorm over the Biden administration’s open border policy and coddling of illegal immigrants.

The sentencing was meted out a little more than two hours after Judge Patrick Haggard announced the guilty verdict on all charges on the fourth day of the Athens, Georgia, murder trial, in which 29 witnesses were called by the prosecution.

The illegal migrant was described as a “sick, twisted, and evil coward” in series of heartbreaking victim impact statements from Riley’s loved ones before the sentencing. He reacted to the harsh words with cold detachment as a translator whispered them into his ear.

{snip}

Her mom, Allyson Phillips, said, “Jose Ibarra took no pity on my scared, panicked and struggling child.”

{snip}

In its closing argument, the defense tried to pin the vicious killing on Diego Ibarra, arguing Jose was the wrong body type to be the killer.

“Jose was short, he was chubby,” defense attorney Kaitlyn Beck said as she made a last ditch attempt to sow reasonable doubt before the judge made his ruling on the verdict.

“She was fast, she could have outrun him,” Beck added. “But there’s another suspect in this case who is taller, who is more physically fit.”

But Ross shot that down, saying Diego would need “magic pixie dust” or “Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak” to have pulled off the murder.

Haggard returned to the bench just 19 minutes after the sides presented their closing arguments to deliver the verdicts.

Sobs filled the gallery and Riley’s family held hands as Haggard read off the guilty verdicts for felony murder, malice murder, kidnapping with bodily injury, aggravated assault with intent to rape, and Peeping Tom charges.

Ibarra remained motionless and expressionless in the courtroom as he was convicted on all counts.

Riley was brutally killed Feb. 22 as she jogged on the University of Georgia campus, not far from Augusta University, where the well-liked 22-year-old was pursing her nursing degree.

Ibarra, 26, attempted to sexually assault the coed but ended up smashing her head with a rock and asphyxiating her when she fiercely battled back.

{snip}

Ibarra ended up in Athens courtesy of a taxpayer-funded flight provided by the administration, traveling from Kennedy Airport in Queens to Atlanta, Ga., in September 2023, New York City sources said.

The flight — which took place less than six months before he hunted Riley down as she jogged — was paid for out of federal funds under a Biden administration program that provided one-way flights for migrants to anywhere in the world.

U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Boston announced on Wednesday the arrests of two illegal immigrants who have been charged with forcibly raping children in Massachusetts, as well as a third individual who was convicted of raping a child in Brazil, and was hiding in the U.S. after being caught and released at the U.S. border in 2022.

{snip}

ICE said one of the suspects, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala, was arrested for forcible rape of a child, but was released in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, by authorities, who ignored a detainer request made by the federal agency to hold or transfer him to federal custody.

The suspect, 21-year-old Mynor Stiven De Paz-Munoz, entered the U.S. on Sept. 24, 2020, near Eagle Pass, Texas, and was released by U.S. Border Patrol with a notice to appear before a Department of Justice (DOJ) Executive Office of Immigration Review Judge.

{snip}

The second suspect, 42-year-old Billy Erney Buitrago-Bustos of Colombia, was arrested by Great Barrington police on Oct. 8, 2023, for allegedly raping a child by force, statutory rape and aggravated rape.

Buitrago-Gusto was admitted into the U.S. on May 4, 2016, at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, though he failed to leave under the terms of his visa.

{snip}

The third suspect, 41-year-old Alexandre Romao De Oliveira, is a foreign fugitive convicted of raping a child in Brazil.

He was convicted in the First Criminal Court of Jaru, Rondônia, Brazil, on Feb. 10, 2022, and sentenced to serve 14 years behind bars.

But according to ICE, Romao De Oliveira fled Brazil before he could serve his sentence. On April 16, 2022, Romao De Oliveira entered the U.S. near Santa Teresa, New Mexico, without admission by an immigration official, and was released from custody after being served a notice to appear before a DOJ immigration review judge.

Data from the German federal government shows that the overwhelming majority of those receiving welfare payments, known as citizen’s money in Germany, have a foreign background.

The statistics from the Federal Employment Agency (BA), provided to Welt newspaper, show that of the more than 4 million people who can work but receive social benefits, more than 2.5 million have a migration background, constituting 63.5 percent. This group includes foreigners and those who have a foreign background, which means their parents may have been born abroad.

The cost of providing this social welfare rose to €12.2 billion last year, but in total, Germany spent nearly €50 billion on immigrants and protecting its border last year.

Many of those receiving this money are actually Ukrainians who have been fleeing the war since 2022. They cost German taxpayers €5.8 billion last year while Syrians cost €3.5 billion. Afghans were behind with €1.3 billion.

Not everyone who receives this allowance is unemployed, but they often receive so little money that they are eligible for additional welfare support. In June 2024, 57 percent of citizen’s allowance recipients received this benefit without being unemployed. Critics argue that this pool of labor provides a cheap workforce that employers are exploiting.

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party responded to the news, writing: “Our social state is being looted. This is the result of the policy of mass migration, driven by the CDU and the traffic light parties for years. CDU chief Merz stands out with hypocritical criticism of this development, but without the CDU, we wouldn’t be feeding a big city with more than 2.5 million migrants from citizens’ money. It is the CDU that systematically blocks a migration turnaround in all the federal states where it governs.”

As Remix News previously noted, it was reported that nearly 50 percent of welfare recipients are foreign; however, the new data also includes those with a “migration background.” The new figure provides a more accurate view of the makeup of welfare recipients.

]]>
The Turin Court of Appeal has acquitted 18 far-left activists who occupied a former roadman’s house in Oulx, in the Susa Valley, to assist migrants attempting to cross the border into France.

The court ruled that the defendants acted “in a state of necessity,” invoking Article 54 of the Italian Penal Code, which exempts individuals from punishment if they commit acts to save themselves or others from imminent danger.

The case dates back to 2018 when the group occupied the property to provide a refuge for migrants traveling through the harsh mountain terrain of Alta Susa Valley. Many migrants, dressed inadequately for winter conditions, faced life-threatening situations while attempting to cross the border into France. The anarchists argued that their actions were necessary to prevent serious harm or death.

In the first instance, the court acknowledged the “invasion of buildings” but ruled for acquittal on the grounds of the “tenuity of the fact,” recognizing the minor nature of the crime. The building, known in Italian as a casa cantoniera which was previously used to house maintenance workers, had been derelict for some time.

The Court of Appeal went further, accepting the defense’s argument that the group’s actions were legally justified by the urgency of the situation.

“The judges recognized that the migrants, finding themselves in those mountain areas with no place to go and sometimes in summer clothes during winter, faced very serious dangers,” explained defense lawyer Danilo Ghia. “Numerous testimonies confirmed that the defendants saved lives.”

The roadman’s house in Oulx became a hub for migrants and a symbol of resistance for anarchist groups in Piedmont. However, critics argued that the occupation facilitated illegal border crossings, violating Italian and European laws and helping to destabilize the region.

Despite this, the court’s decision highlighted the humanitarian aspect of the case. By applying Article 54, the judges established that the anarchists acted under the necessity of saving lives, creating what some see as a precedent for future cases involving humanitarian aid and migrant assistance.

The decision could encourage similar occupations and actions, potentially leading to legal impunity in cases of unlawful activity carried out under the guise of necessity.

“The principle remains that migrants were not forced to venture into these mountainous areas; they chose to do so to illegally cross another European border,” noted Il Giornale in its report on the ruling. “The anarchists, in facilitating this transition, committed a crime. Yet the court has now created a precedent for such actions to be acquitted.”

Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio made the announcement, citing a government programme, according to which Finland’s development cooperation is conditional on countries’ agreement to repatriate their own citizens at Finland’s request and their support for the international rules-based order.

Tavio stated, “The suspension means that no new funding decisions will be made until concrete progress has been made in repatriation cooperation with Somalia.”

Original agreement was that development aid was available provided Somalia accepted Finland’s unapproved Somali immigrants back

Currently a number (which has not been revealed) of Somali citizens are living in Finland but do not have residence permits which means that Finland wants to see them returned to their home country.

Charities and humanitarian aid will not be affected

The sum of between €8 and €9 million which had been budgeted for bilateral development in 2025 has been put on hold although there will be no restriction on previously agreed humanitarian aid or commitments towards NGOs.

Although the minister hopes that the matter will be resolved amicably, his position was made clear when he stated “Return cooperation has not reached a sufficient level. States must naturally strive to ensure that all those illegally in their country are returned, when that can be done safely.”

Few believe President Donald Trump will solve all our problems. Yet he ran on a platform of mass deportations and ending the “occupation” of the country. Can white advocates realistically expect anything positive from the new Administration? And what are the consequences if he fails?

Trump’s Anti-DEI Brigade Prepares to Take Power https://www.amren.com/news/2024/11/trumps-anti-dei-brigade-prepares-to-take-power/ Wed, 20 Nov 2024 22:30:01 +0000 https://www.amren.com/?p=180774 "The American people overwhelmingly want to end DEI."

President-elect Trump‘s initial Cabinet picks show he’s moving swiftly to implement the anti-trans, anti-DEI and anti-social justice agenda that underpinned his reelection campaign.

Why it matters: In the eyes of many Republicans, Trump’s decisive election victory vindicated their hostility toward nebulous “woke” ideologies. In practice, their plans could mean purging the federal government of policies Democrats supported to reverse what they saw as unfairness and inequalities.

Trump’s latest wave of Cabinet nominees include Pete Hegseth for secretary of defense, Tulsi Gabbard for director of national intelligence and Matt Gaetz for attorney general — all of whom have blasted DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion) policies as racially divisive.

  • Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy — two of the most prominent critics of what they call “the woke mind virus” — have been tasked with “slashing and burning” federal spending from outside the government.

{snip}

Driving the news: Trump’s shock nomination of Hegseth, a Fox News host, for defense secretary is the clearest sign yet that the president-elect wants his incoming Cabinet to be staffed by conservatives who oppose DEI initiatives.

  • Hegseth, a decorated combat veteran, wrote a New York Times bestseller this year accusing the Pentagon’s leadership of sabotaging military readiness and recruitment by prioritizing DEI.

{snip}

Zoom in: Trump and his conservative allies have long seen the Department of Education as being at the center of their mission to eliminate what they view as left-wing ideologies in the classroom.

  • Trump has proposed dismantling the department entirely — and vowed to “cut federal funding for any school pushing critical race theory, radical gender ideology and other inappropriate racial, sexual, or political content on our children.”

{snip}

Between the lines: The “anti-woke” crusade’s best chance to enact society-wide changes could come through the Justice Department, which Trump has nominated Gaetz to lead.

  • Gaetz, a flame-throwing loyalist who has labeled DEI “racist and dangerous,” would oversee a purge of career officials and the renovation — or potential shuttering — of DOJ’s Civil Rights Division.
  • Trump transition official Mark Paoletta accused career DOJ officials this week of blocking efforts to sue Yale University for alleged anti-Asian and anti-white discrimination during Trump’s first term, and warned staff against “sabotaging” the new administration’s agenda.
  • “The American people overwhelmingly want to end DEI, ban boys from playing in girls’ sports and using girls’ locker rooms, secure our border, and deport illegal aliens,” Paoletta wrote on X.

Post Election Migrant Surge Yet to Materialize, Says CBP Source https://www.amren.com/news/2024/11/post-election-migrant-surge-yet-to-materialize-says-cbp-source/ Wed, 20 Nov 2024 22:29:57 +0000 https://www.amren.com/?p=180773 That may not last as Mexico slackens its enforcement.

Despite the resurgence of a few migrant caravans that have formed in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, a post-election rush to the border after a Trump victory many expected would occur has yet to materialize.

According to a source within Customs and Border Protection, illegal border crossings since the November 5 election have only risen slightly. The source, not authorized to speak to the media, says the news is good but Border Patrol agents working along the border are not out of the woods yet.

The source attributes the failure of a visible surge to reach the immediate border region is the result of continued, albeit slightly reduced, law enforcement and military actions in Mexico keeping migrants from free, unrestricted travel to the United States border. Another less visible factor reducing illegal border crossings, according to the source, is the continued application of non-Congressionally approved Biden-Harris migrant parole programs that allow more than two thousand migrants to enter at official, legal land ports of entry and by way of international airports within the United States.

According to the source, intelligence reports indicate pressure is building in southern Mexico and the potential for a significant surge in migrant crossings is still possible. As reported by Breitbart Texas, as a precaution, law enforcement authorities in Texas are bracing for a final Biden-Harris border surge that may occur before inauguration day.

The CBP source tells Breitbart Texas the potential border migrant surge is entirely dependent on the continued efforts of Mexico’s National Institute of Migration (INM) and the country’s National Guard who have largely precluded migrants from utilizing Mexico’s dangerous network of freight trains, known as “La Bestia” or “the Beast” in English, to quickly reach the southern border at no cost.

{snip}

According to the source, without the ability to hop on the trains at will without being impeded by Mexico’s INM or national guard troops, the migrants are reliant mostly on human smugglers and commercial bus and van lines to reach the border. {snip}

In late December, enhanced law enforcement efforts in Mexico significantly reduced the number of migrants using the trains as part of a bi-national election year arrangement between the Biden/Harris administration and the Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador government in Mexico. {snip}

Those efforts in Mexico have begun to wain in some areas. Sources in Mexico have reported a noticed decrease in the presence of Mexico’s INM and National Guard soldiers at highway checkpoints {snip}
