This is like ... a sugar rush but it reminds me of my highschool years so.. its my sugar rush nostalgia. I would invite you to check it out though. Its a cute story with ridiculous embellishments.

Alien princess falls in love with lech boy, comedy ensues. Actually, that first episode is so ridiculously hilarious.
Ok, to indulge: so, Aliens come to earth and propose a race or they take over the planet. So a random lot is thrown and who gets it, but the very unluky Ataru (which I think is what his name means). So, the parent's neighborhood all hates the parents for it (because they know how deadbeat he is) and Ataru is oblivious, chasing girls.
He gets home, they tell him, he freaks out saying "No. Hell no." To which the reported there is like "What? you won't give your life to save the planet? you ungrateful jerk!" :) so then his "girlfriend" Shinobu tells Ataru that she will marry him if he does it. So.. motivation. Now, it turns out that he's going to race Lum, the big alien/oni (oni= devil) 's daugther. So Ataru thinks he has it in the bag, race day comes, ready, set, go: .... and she can fly. and electrocute him. 3 days of this. Earth hates Ataru and his family. Then out of desperation, Ataru, on last day, rigs up this plunger gun and steals Lum's bikini top off. She can't fly, he catches her horns (oni's have horns, also point of the race) and screams "yay, now I can get married" (to Shinobu he means) but Lum takes it as a marriage proposal and says, Sure. Of course.
So now! Lum comes to live at the parent's house, earth is saved, Shinobu is pissed, parent's are dealing with social stigma and.. well, all of Lum's alien friends come visit and wreak havoc.

Very entertaining and absurd. But as the show grows on, Lum and Ataru sincerely care about each other so.. you end up falling for their rom com. worth it. I love this series.

In the tradition of boy meets alien girl ... wait ... I believe this show really set the stage for this genre of anime! Yes it did! And they not only did it first, but they did it best. I'm talking about Urusei Yatura! The Invaders come to Earth to conquer it and the only person who can save the planet is the unluckiest fellow around; Ataru Moroboshi ... who makes Rick Flair smile. He challenges the Invaders to a game of Tag with their champion being the stunning Lum. During the course of the game, Ataru makes the classic blunder: "I'm going to get married!" And that's where things get really out of control.

This DVD sets the stage for the show which has no shame in picking at all things Japanese. :)

Like ever anime of Rumiko Takahashi, Urusei Yatsura is one of the best anime ever made. It is from early 80s, actually from 1981. It consist of 196 TV episodes, 8 OVAs and 6 movies of extremely funny stories.
Rumiko Takahashi has made excellent works beside this one, like Maison Ikkoku, her best: Ranma 1/2, and her lastest superb work Inu Yasha.
This DVD contains the first 4 episodes. Unfortunately, AnimEigo is releasing the DVDs bimonthly, so it's going to take a while (like hmm 8 years?) to watch all the episodes. They should release all the DVDs, they have made them all, because they have sold them in boxsets first.

While younger anime audiences in the US may not know about this series, us older viewers will fondly remember UY as one of the first series to come to the US in both anime & manga formats. Unfortunately this was one of the series that didn't fare so well in those early & rough days of manga/anime, so unfortunately the manga series is now out of print. The anime series is luckily still in print, so the newbies can still get this part of the UY franchise.

The plotline of the series is somewhat simplistic for a Takahashi manga, which is one of it's strengths. Lum is one of several invading aliens bent on conquering planet Earth. Luckily for Earth, the aliens are willing to give them a chance to keep their planet from being conquered- if the Earth's champion can catch Lum in a game of tag. Chosen at random is the extremely unlucky & lecherous Ataru, a Japanese boy with more bad habits than good ones. When a misunderstanding causes Lum to believe that Ataru wants to marry her, Ataru is "cursed" to have the beautiful alien by his side forever.

I just love this series. True, some parts of the series & animation do seem dated by today's standards, but the sheer quality of UY shines through & it's very easy to see why this series is still so well loved by it's fans here in the US & in Japan. Whenever I watch this series I can't help but wonder why it hasn't become more popular over here, especially with Takahashi's other works being so popular.

If you consider yourself an anime fan, you have to see this series. If you haven't at least watched one episode, you really can't count yourself as being hardcore. (Liking it isn't necessary, but watching at least one UY episode, OAV or movie is!)
