Kipkeino was born in Kipsamo, Nandi District, Kenya on 17 January 1940. His name, Kipchoge, is a Nandi language expression for “born near the grain storage shed”.
Tragically, Kipkeino lost his parents when he was young. He was then raised by an aunt.
