To Your DirectionsWith 22 universities and colleges, the Ruhr region has the highest density of further education establishments anywhere in Europe. These include five universities alone in the cities of Bochum, Dortmund, Duisburg, Essen and Witten, as well as Hagen as the site of the only state distance university in Germany. In addition, Folkwang University of the Arts is an internationally-acclaimed art college with its base in the Ruhr region. Moreover, the area is also the youngest academic region in the country. The first university in the region, the Ruhr-Universität in Bochum, was only established in 1962.
The number of new students is growing continuously. These students can choose from a range of around 400 courses. Subjects such as mathematics and natural sciences are in particular demand. In addition, the universities in the region also teach subjects such as medicine and health science, linguistic and cultural sciences, law, economics and social sciences, engineering or art studies.
However, the universities are not the only places in the Metropole Ruhr where academic qualifications can be obtained. At 17 different universities of applied sciences students have the opportunity to undertake practice-relevant and qualified studies in various subjects, such as economics, logistics, administration or management. The healthcare sector, a strong economic segment in the Ruhr region, is also well served by the range of university options: in the winter semester 2010/11 the first state university of healthcare in Germany commenced in Bochum.
