Roswell (N.M.) Daily Record Thursday, October 11,1979 19 nt&i The 'Bottom Ten' Georgia wins, leaves top spot vacant By STEVE HARVEY ©Universal Press Syndicate The Bottom 10 jinx struck for the fourth week in a row as another No. 1-ranked team was underthrown. Like Northwestern (1-4), Wyoming (2-3) and Colorado (1-4) before it, Georgia (1-3) has failed to avoid victory. And, afterward, rather than risk another humiliating weekend, The Bottom 10 selectors cast no first- place votes, leaving the No. 1 position vacant this week. One motion that was narrowly defeated was to rank South Carolina (4-1) No. 1 because it can't possibly win this weekend — it's idle. The College All-Stars «)-o) were also briefly considered. As it the Georgia victory wasn't enough, Wyoming was suspended from the rankings for the rest of the year with it second win of the seaosn, a 23-3 decision over UTEP, which was careful to observe the "No Miners Allowed" signs posted in the end zones. The Rankings School, record last week 1. No teams received first place votes. 2. Penn (0-3) 7-12, Columbia Next loss Brown 3. Oregon State (o-5) 0-41, Washington Next loss California 4. Pacific was 21 point underdog. Almost lost to TCU. Rout of the week: Auburn vs. Vanderbilt. Crummy game of the week: Colorado State vs. UTEP. Quote book: Los Angeles broadcaster Jim Healy, after Michigan coach Bo Schembechler was accused of shoving a student reporter three times: "At least when Woody Hayes picked on a student, he picked on a linebacker." Chicago critic Gary Deeb nominates as his favorite blooper so far, this one from Chris Schenkel: "And Maryland had to come from behind to beat tough Villanova, 24-0." The Pros In 1969, the only thing at stake was the Super Bowl when the two teams met. Butthis tiem, The Bottom lo lead Texas favorite over Oklahoma By United Press International It'll be the wishbone against the veer at the Cotton Bowl Saturday as the third-rated Oklahoma Sooners travel to Dallas to take on the fifth- ranked Texas Longhorns in what shapes up as the biggest game of the young football season. Last week the Sooners, 4-0, showed their former coach, Chuck Fairbanks, just how well they have perfected the wishbone he instituted at Norman, Okla., in a 49-24 rout of Colorado. Texas, 3-0, beat Rice 26-9 and the Longhorns will be looking to avenge last year's 31-10 loss to Oklahoma in this bitter annual rivalry. Oklahoma is led again by Heisman Trophy winner Billy Sims, who usually plays only half a game and dishes out a season's worth of punishment to his helpless opponents. Sims — who already has 11 TDs — scored four times and ran for 118 yards last week against the out- manned Butlaioes and he ripped the Longhorns for 131 yards and two TDs last year. When the Texas offense stalls, the Longhorns simply turn to John Goodson — or rather his golden toe. Goodson kicked four field goals for the second straight week last Saturday and Texas limited Rice to 169 total yards in rolling over the Owls. Last year, the Longhorns were held to only 191 total yards by the Sooners, but the Oklahoma defense hasn't played as well as last year's squad. Texas figures to be gunning for revenge in front of a Cotton Bowl crowd of over 72,000 and ths Sooners' high-risk offense should provide Texas with plenty of good field position. Our prediction — Texas 27, Oklahoma 14. East Penn State 34, Army 7 — The Nittany Lions finally returned a Pate seeks links win COLUMBUS,Ga. (UPI) -The loth annual Southern Open starts Thursday with defending champion Jerry Pate seeking his third consecutive championship at Green Island Country Club's 6,700-yard course. But Pate, who is ranked 12th on the PGA's money list this year, will have his work cut out in the 72-hole tournament with a $200,000 purse. The field includes eight golfers who have won a total 11 tour victories this year and 10 players who are in the top 60 on the 1979 money list. Kennesaw's Larry Nelson, ranked second on the money list with $281,022, has won two tournaments as have Jerry McGree and Hubert Green. Other tour winners playing in the Southern include Bob Byman, Ben Crenshaw, Wayne Levi, Mark McCumber and Calvin Peete. gleam to Joe Paterno s eye last week in routing Maryland. The Cadets will need all the artillery they can muster at University Park. Yale 24, Dartmouth 6 - The Elis. out to avenge last year's 10-3 loss to the Big Green, have solidified their defense and they blanked Colgate last week. Syracuse 37, Temple 30 — Suddenly the Orangemen have one of the nation's most explosive and well- balanced offenses and they should be too much to handle in a Veterans Stadium Shootout. The Owls also have a fine offense, but they haven't faced a team with Syracuse's firepower. Pitt 26, Cincinnati 3 - The nth- ranked Panthers should continue to growl against the outclassed Bearcats, who were thrashed by North Carolina last week. West Virginia 13, Boston College 10 — Mountaineers no longer a joke after beating Kentucky last week. South Alabama 42, Florida o — The Bear calls off the dogs at halftime, but the second-ranked Tide doesn't lose much with the second string. Louisiana State 17, Georgia 6 — Georgia's defense will keep things close, but the Fighting Tigers, No. 12, remember last year's loss and have too much talent. Florida State 24, Mississippi State 3 — The Seminoles will be in an ornery mood when they remember last season's 55-27 debacle at the hands of the 2oth-rated Bulldogs. Tennessee 21, Georgia Tech 20 — The Volunteers will be smarting after being upset by Mississippi State last week, but the Yellow Jackets played Notre Dame tough and will hang close. Southwest Texas Tech 16, Arkansas 14 - The Razorbacks embarrassed the Red Raiders last year and it's table- turning time at Lubbock. Houston 9, Texas A4M 7 - The sixth-rated Cougars have one of the nation's strongest defenses and the Aggies lack the high-powered offense to test it. Baylor 23, Southern Methodist 10 — The Bears almost upset Houston last week and have too much defense for the broken-down Mustangs. Midwest'* Michigan 30, Minnesota 7 — You think the No. 11 Wolverines are going to lose twice in Ann Arbor this season? Indiana 20, Ohio State 16 - The eighth-rated Buckeyes took Northwestern lightly last week and it showed. The Fighting Hoosiers can contain Ohio State's attack. Upset special. Nebraska 51, Kansas 17 — The Cornhuskers have been as awesome as anyone in recent weeks and the Jayhawks' defense should be easy pickin' for the nation's No. 4 team. Notre Dame 33, Air Force 6 — Ninth-ranked Fighting Irish had it too close for comfort last week and should shoot down the Falcons easily. West Southern Cal 24, Stanford 21 — The Cardinals played the Trojans tough last year and may catch top-rated Southern Cal looking ahead was up for grabs when the Jets limped into Baltimore Sunday. And the Colts failed again. They tumbled to No. 3 in the rankings with a 10-8 win over New York, which scored three in the second quarter, three in the third quarter, two in the fourth quarter and had the bases loaded when the game ended. While the Colts' string of losses ended at 10, one other streak continued. Wendell Tyler, the Rams' running back, suffered his second straight upset stomach. The first he attributed to two chili dogs (with onions) eaten just before game time. His latest, he said, occurred after he "drank a lot of fluids before the game." Following the Bills' 7-o loss to Chicago, Buffalo quarterback Joe Ferguson was quoted as saying that freezing weather was a factor because "some of our backs have a hard time catching the ball on a good day." It should be even chilier in the huddle for Joe after his backs read that. Team, record l The rankings last week 7-10, Kansas City Pittsburgh 24-35, Seattle N. J. Giants def. Jets, 10-8 Houston Def.
