Combat Films, War Drama - 98 Minutes - 1957
Two veteran sea captains have a battle of wits in this suspenseful World War II movie. Robert Mitchum plays the American hero, while Curt Jurgens takes on the unenviable task of playing the German commander, albeit one who isn't a big fan of his superiors. There's hardly any ideology presented on either side, and there's very little throat-clearing before getting down to the two ships playing a tense game of cat and mouse in the Atlantic Ocean. The special effects understandably earned an Academy Award, as the giant plumes resulting from depth charges and the humming of the sleek torpedoes are sights to behold, even now.
