Ending months of talks, Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. and New England Mutual Life Insurance Co. announced a merger today that would combine New England's affluent clientele with MetLife's financial strength.
The merger, described as the largest ever among mutual life insurers, reportedly doesn't involve exchanging stock or cash. Both companies are mutual insurers, which means their assets are owned by policyholders rather than shareholders.
Under the proposal, New England Mutual will become a unit of MetLife, the nation's second-largest life insurer, with its assets and liabilities transferred to Met Life. …
