The Central Intelligence Agency, more commonly known as CIA, is a civilian intelligence agency owned by the United States Federal Government. Formed on September 18, 1947 as a successor of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), it reports directly to the Director of National Intelligence (DNI).

Headquartered in Langley, Virginia, the CIA employs an estimated 20,000 people.

Shape and Font of the CIA Logo

The CIA logo is undoubtedly one of the most popular and instantly recognizable logos in the world. It consists of three basic components – the eagle, the compass rose, and the shield. The bald eagle looking over its right shoulder is the national bird of the United States of America and symbolizes strength and vigilance. The compass rose, on the other hand, comprises of some 16 radiating spokes that embody the accumulation of intelligence data from all over the world to the agency’s headquarters. The shield is also a symbol of defense and protection.

The CIA logo features very simple, yet powerful typefaces that are not only legible and clear, but portray the agency’s message very well.
