NBA Logo

The National Basketball Association, more commonly known as NBA, is a hugely popular professional basketball league founded in the United States in June 1949 after the merger of two competing bodies, the National Basketball League (established 1937) and the Basketball Association of America (established 1946). Originally named the Basketball Association of America, it turned out to be one of the most prominent North American professional sport leagues, alongside the National Football League (NFL), the National Hockey League (NHL), and the Major League Baseball (MLB).

The NBA comprises of 29 teams from the US and 1 team from Canada. It is headquartered in Secaucus, New Jersey.

DESIGN ELEMENTS, HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF NBA LOGO

Shape of the NBA Logo

The NBA logo is one of the most popular and instantly recognizable logos in sports history. It was designed in 1969 by Alan Siegel, founder of the NYC-based strategic branding agency Siegel+Gale. It based on the silhouette of Jerry West, the legendary “Mr. Clutch” of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Using red, white and blue colors, the NBA logo incorporates a player ardently dribbling the ball upcourt with his left hand.

Interestingly, the NBA has been reluctant to admit that it is Jerry West in their corporate logo. The principle reason for their negligence, according to Siegel, a lifelong basketball fan, is that “they want to institutionalize it rather than individualize it”.

Colors of the NBA Logo

The use of blue color in the NBA logo stands for approachability, excellence and grace of the association, whereas the red color symbolizes passion, courage and determination. The white color, on the other hand, depicts nobility, elegance and purity.

Font of the NBA Logo

The NBA logo features the Helvetica typeface.
