Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, more commonly known as BMW, is a world-renowned German automobile, motorcycle and engine manufacturer headquartered in Munich, Bavaria. Established in 1917 largely by Franz Josef Popp, the company employs 102,007 people worldwide with total assets of €123.42 billion as of 2011.

BMW also owns and produces the MINI marque and Rolls-Royce branded cars.

The BMW logo is credited as one of the most crucial components behind the success of the automobile giant. The emblem consists of four quadrants in blue and white tint; a roundel that holds these two national colors of Bavaria. A popular theory also proposes that it depicts the white propeller blade against the blue sky; reminiscent of the company’s origins as a manufacturer of militia airplanes during World War I.
