DESIGN ELEMENTS, HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF LINUX LOGO

Shape of the Linux Logo

The Linux logo consists of a penguin character called “Tux”, which is the official mascot of the Linux kernel. It was conceptualized by the Linux creator Linus Torvalds himself. He got the unique idea when saw an image of a penguin on an FTP website which bore an uncanny resemblance to the legendary animator Nick Park’s Creature Comforts characters. The final draft of the Linux logo was, however, designed in 1996 by American computer programmer Larry Ewing as a participant in a design competition held by the company. Ewing created it with the help of another computer programmer named Alan Cox, using the free software GIMP v. 0.54.

The mascot was further tuned up by Torvalds before it was publicly introduced.

James Hughes came up with the name “Tux”, actually extracted from Torvalds Unix. Alternatively, it was inspired by tuxedo, an outfit which is strikingly similar to the shaded dark and white plumage of the aquatic bird. The “Tux” portrays a perfect picture of Linux because penguin is a traditional symbol of agility, drive and purpose.

The Linux logo is one of the most popular and instantly recognizable logos in the computer industry.
