DESIGN ELEMENTS, HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF NeXT LOGO

Shape of NeXT Logo

Steve Jobs hired the legendary graphic designer Paul Rand in 1986 to design the NeXT logo. Rand came up with a 100-page brochure analyzing different prospects for the new brand, including the precise angle for the block-shaped NeXT logo (precise 28°). According to many experts, actually he was the one to rename the company from being “NXT” to “NeXT” – with the lowercase “e” symbolizing education, excellence, expertise, exceptional and excitement.

Rand was still a design consultant for IBM at the time, so when Jobs approached him with the design project he plainly refused citing a conflict of interest. Jobs had to convince IBM vice-chairman Paul Rizzo to persuade Rand to work for him. Rand demanded an advance fee of $100,000 and made it clear that he will only create one concept.
